Can't split a stereo file into mono in Logic (solved)

I can't believe there isn't a simple straight forward way to put one side of a stereo track in a mono track. A friend of mine has stereo tracks from a CD, the left side is the bass the right side what he wants to play himself. Of course panning would allow to here only the bass on the left side, but for a proper mix I should be able to pan this left side. In Bitwig we have a Tool device which simply can pan and level each side of a stereo track individually. Such a basic tool I could not find in Logic.
I tried to convert the file, with a setting interleaved-->split, which obviously die split the file, but trying to place it into a mono track, it loads again both sides into stereo track. It doesn't work and is completely counter intuitive. Such a basic thing must simple...
I am sure Edgar knows what to do...

P.S. the solution is to click and hold on the stereo symbol in the track channel and then select the channel you want to hear solely… Dead simple but you need to know it…

i use an external editor for this. i think last time i did it i used audiofinder. but dsp quattro will do it as well. if you set up the 'external audio editor' thing in logic it will launch when you need to edit in logic. been a while since i've had to do it though.

it's def one of the things apple needs to sort out. split to dual mono and also "strip silence -> make new files" needs to be in there somehwere. so useful for so many things.

You did convert the stereo interleaved audio file then remove L and R from the file name first. After that try to load the (hopefully individual) 2 mono files into Logic.

Actually that was the first I tried. The project was still open and the file name reverted automatically back to the name with .L and .R…
Anyway this would be far away from simple. I would expect at least being able to access each file individually in the project audio browser, but there its stupidly glued together as well…
(And I would not call this simple either, but at least it would make sense…)

I use Soundforge Pro for this sort of work. It's a simple select/drag/drop operation ...

Unfortunately not. I did that, you define it as mono track, drop only the left channel and it changes back into a stereo track and shows both channels… Then do it again, it plays only one channel. But if you want the right channel you don’t get it at all, it will only choose the left channel no matter what input is selected…

I’ll post a screenshot, but it definitely works since i often record vocal dual mics on a stereo track and select mic with it and just process mono.

If you want the visual feedback to represent the channel routing (so, if you have a stereo file but you only want to see and hear the right channel, you select R as per the Apple help page I posted, you'll still see the stereo file) you should split the stereo file into to 2 mono files!

I usually do this with a Selection-Based-Process with two inserts

- a Gain with Balance set far (left or right) depending which channel I'm selecting
- a Gain with the Mono button selected to centre the <left or right> signal

So, copy your stereo file to another channel, and run that SBP on both stereo files; one to extract and keep the Left, and one to extract and keep the Right.

Thanks for all the input. Its embarrassing which I knew it will be and I knew it was simple, but the most crucial missing information was not mentioned, even not on the apple support page:
I had to click and hold on that stereo symbol to open the context menu (I tried ctrl-click though). That was the missing info, nothing else. I followed those video tutorials and see something which is different than what I experience… I suspected they use a different version etc…
Anyway if someone is as confused as I was, it might help…
