I want to copy over a .Wav file open in Ableton but Ableton keeps hold of file handle - any way around that ?

I dragged in a file, 1.Wav file into Ableton.
It plays Ok in the timeline.
I want to be able to copy over 1.Wav with another audio file 2.Wav.

I can't do this because Ableton keeps the file handle open. Other DAWs like Reaper don't do this and you can copy and the change is reflected in the timeline.

Is there a setting or something in Ableton that will allow this ?

(I am using Ableton Lite 11)

On disk, and have the change reflected on the Ableton timeline.

Yes, change the file on disk, and have all instances of that .Wav updated with the new file on the Ableton timeline.

Change the instances in one go using Live's own project management tools.

I need to do it outside Ableton - there's a good reason why I want to do it this way 8)

Why can't you simply delete the file and then replace it?

In normal circumstances it would be a trivial operation using Live's built-in management tools (you can literally drag the new sample over the current file reference, and from then on it will reference the new sample in all the places the previous one was). But if you have a special reason for not doing it this way, I believe you :D

Do you have the file open in another program? Are you using session or arrangemenht view? Is the WAV file open in both views?

Is it possible to write a Script or Macro in Ableton in the management tool that could do the following:

a) Let's say I have a kick and snare .Wav samples in the timeline, Kick.Wav, Snare.Wav

b) I copy replacement_kick.Wav, and replacement_snare.Wav to a temp folder

c) Run Ableton script/maco to temporarily make Kick.Wav, Snare.Wav offline. Then copy replacement_kick.Wav, and replacement_snare.Wav, over Kick.Wav and Snare.Wav respectively. Then bring Kick.Wav and Snare.Wav back online, and thus change it that way.

I don't know whether that is possible. The files are put offline while the external editor is running, so if there is a way to engage external editors for particular files in the unofficial API, and so on, maybe it can be done. You can also manually place a specific file offline using this method, if it doesn't need to be 100% automated, of course. Are you sure you aren't willing to describe what you actually need this for? :D

You can replace in place any audio file in Live with Hot-Swap (usually a round button with an icon that resembles a recycle logo, in Audio Clips the actual filename works like a URL link, you can drag files over it) or using File > Manage Files menu option, there is no need to nuke file 1.wav with 2.wav

https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/manag ... -swap-mode

Also, I just noticed the Manage/Replace Files panel has a "Edit" button besides each listed sample, and if you click it it actually makes the sample "offline" (without an external editor set in Preferences), allowing you to edit and overwrite the file.

You can right-click the filename "link" in a Audio Clip for faster access to Manage Sample, Show in Browser and Show in Explorer (Finder in MacOS I guess) options.

I saw the Edit button which puts the individual file offline.
Is there no way in Ableton to set up a shortcut key to invoke an Ableton script to "put all audio files in the project offline"?
