DAW of course, I've always been a software guy.... :)

Post

First DAW was Metro and a multitrack audio recording program that linked to it… I can’t even remember the name… (Metro does audio and MIDI now, full DAW), Later moved to Studio Vision Pro, but everything else was hardware until the mid 00s, and by then I was using Digital Performer. Software wasn’t really up to the task of replacing my hardware synths, as far as I could tell. The mid 00s was when I thought they really started getting good. My first VSTi was Absynth, but I didn’t do much with it for a while. I think the second VSTi I purchased was Zebra 2. I actually went all software for a time, but now I find that some things are still better in hardware.

DAW first, I was 22 when I met cubase in 2006, then switched to live in 2009.

I got my first synth in 2011, a Machinedrum. Now in 2022 I am getting rid of my hardware, never found a way to have a hybrid set up that works for me.

1982 - A Sequential Circuits Pro One (with a built-in step sequencer)
1983 - Roland JX-3P (my first MIDI keyboard)
1986 - Texture PC based MIDI sequencer

Of course, in the modern era, most people would probably start with GarageBand and then discover hardware synths sometime after.

1990...ish... tried first with a KAWAI sequencer but settled for an Amiga 500 with MIDI interface - MED (we had no OctaMED at the time) - some really expensive keyboard with a lot of quite impressive sounds a friend had from his dad who played in a cover band.
1991 Amiga 500 Protracker with a sample module
1993 Amiga 500 + MIDI - OctaMED this time - AKAI S01
1997 Amiga 600 + MIDI - AKAI CD3000XL + sample module only
2001...ish AMD Athlon based PC and Fruity Loops. From there on only computers + sound cards + MIDI controllers

The DAW was a bit premature to be honest. The hardware lasted much longer.
