i stumbled upon this in a sale video recently and this lugin seems interesting but heavily overpriced, there are also freebies that can emulate an 8bit sound, so what makes it special? when at all? im always interested in 8bit lofi plugins :D

If you own the hardware and want it and all of it's quirks in software form then this is it. I actively dislike it and I paid good money for it on the UA platform. I read others that love the hardware and already came to terms with the oddities of the (to me) arcane interface. In my opinion it isn't worth the effort. I'd demo it and see if you hold a different opinion. I didn't and it wasn't a good move. It is just money in the end but a bit of demo time would be recommended. YMMV.

it is its own thing - I like it but I think other 8bit type plugins are also worth having. A new one to me, which I will probably get, is this https://fadedinstruments.com/litbit/

As always - only buy softube on sale. I paid 79$ for OTO and think the actual value is more like $39 - 49 so I feel I overpaid for sure compared to other things on the market. But it has a good sound so I do use it
EDIT went back and had a good play with OTO and it really shines under automation. Worth the 79$ sale price for sure

One of the unique features of the Biscuit was that it let you toggle and flip any of the 8 bits that made up the sound. Typical bitcrushers won't have this function. I think you can do this (or fairly similar) with Melda's free MBitFun. There's also the free Bitunz (which was originally released as Otto with a basic GUI).

The Softube Biscuit gives you everything in a neat package but at a cost. I'd be tempted to pick it up if it ever went down to no-brainer price territory as there's not much chance of getting the hardware at a reasonable price.
