jungle production - sixtuplets

thoughtd id share something thats helped my jungle beats a lot, messing with sixtuplets, often starting on the offbeat and combining them with straight rhythms like 8th or 16th notes and dotted rhythms.
for slower breakbeats like breakbeat techno, or funk/soul/hiphop, triplets work well to give things a breakbeat feel. usually not playing all 3 triplets in one beat, but maybe playing the last one of a beat and maybe the first one of the next beat. jungle is often made by speeding up old funk and hiphop breaks that sometimes use triplets or offbeat triplets so thats where i got the sixtuplets idea, i think a lot of jungle music uses this as im hearing it in some songs now
also loopcloud is great for jungle samples including one shots
has anyone else got any tips for jungle or breakbeat production?
Im experimenting with those rolling glitchy snares and hats you get in this kind of music. the combo of sixtuplets and straight rhythms is great for this but id still love some tips for these jungle snare rolls, some more ways to experiment with getting the texture right and making it less like a machine gun, i think they manage to change the texture of the sound itself as the snare repeats as well as just changing the volume, filter, pitch etc of the sample
someone like sully is an excellent example of this kind of snare roll that im aiming for

I used to use a slow break, speed it up to 145 ish, re-inforce the kick & snare letting the break(s) rattle along in the background.j wazza wrote: Thu Feb 17, 2022 3:09 am

thanks, ill try that! ive had some good results by using jungle loops as a backdrop and layering over the top, it works best for me when the loop is quite simple to begin with so theres more room to add your own stuffthecontrolcentre wrote: Thu Feb 17, 2022 3:17 amI used to use a slow break, speed it up to 145 ish, re-inforce the kick & snare letting the break(s) rattle along in the background.j wazza wrote: Thu Feb 17, 2022 3:09 am

i havent actually tried speeding/pitching up a slower break yet, i guess i should as this is how it was made originally. ive tried speeding up snare samples and stuff with some decent results so should try it with the whole loop

use filters and transient designers to remove stuff too ... it will add movement. I resample my breaks over and over. I like to set up a load of similarish breaks in Sampler so each beat is on its own key. Then jam around with thems ... some cool grooves can come out of it. Roll yer own Amen Break

ill try that too, thanks! do you mean the whole loop will be assigned to one key, all synced to the same tempo so you can cut between them?thecontrolcentre wrote: Thu Feb 17, 2022 4:10 am use filters and transient designers to remove stuff too ... it will add movement. ive just been experimenting with using ring mod to change the sound of a break or a normal drum sample to make it more electronic and it can work really well. ive also tried using icarus for resynthesis on a snare sample and stuff to change the texture of it and having some great results, i think this will be the sort of thing that will take my snare rolls to the next level.

i use bitwig and think i could do that by making a multisamplethecontrolcentre wrote: Thu Feb 17, 2022 6:10 pmThat's exactly what I mean.j wazza wrote: Thu Feb 17, 2022 5:56 am thanks! do you mean the whole loop will be assigned to one key, all synced to the same tempo so you can cut between them?Which DAW are you using?
i just read an interview with special request/paul woolford who said he does a similar thing, but he makes several edits of the same break and then does your method of assigning them each to a key to play around with chopping between them

I use clips in Live sometimes (in session view) ... I set up several similar clips on a track, then randomize their follow behaviour while recording the audio to another track.

I've been doing it that way since about 1996 when I used a Cheetah SX16 sampler and Cubase on an Atari STe.j wazza wrote: Thu Feb 17, 2022 6:15 pm i just read an interview with special request/paul woolford who said he does a similar thing, but he makes several edits of the same break and then does your method of assigning them each to a key to play around with chopping between them

bitwig has the clip/session thing too but i dont really use it, i might try it and randomising it is a nice idea to get some interesting variations and it would be faster than doing everything manually, you could just delete the parts that end up sounding shitthecontrolcentre wrote: Thu Feb 17, 2022 6:19 pm I use clips in Live sometimes (in session view) ...
