Windows 11 upgrade in the UK

Is it more or less a GUI update?

What kind of a reply do you expect here? Read up on it on the internet, and judge for yourself. People here provide you with opinions. These can be positive, negative, or neutral, and coloured from perceptions people have.

Windows 10 could also have been seen as a mere GUI update, although it offers so much more than Windows 8 or Windows 7.

I haven't seen nearly enough from Windows 11 to even form an opinion, even though I know a few things about it.

I have been using Win 11 for a few months now, and at first it felt like a Linux\OSX\Windows hybrid GUI,and it felt a bit new. But now that I have got use to it, it just seems like Windows again.

Other than the GUI and the weird behaviour of the menus, it's much the same. The actual windows environment seems snappier, boot times a slightly longer, but I guess that will get fixed in patches, (And by slightly I am talking a handful of seconds)

The look of the new icons etc is different, does feel a bit like Linux tbh. Some things have changed in terms of groupings (Icons bottom right)

But all in all, its a new OS that can only get better. Drivers are needed that are more optimal (Wifi, Graphics, Chipset) but nothing isn't working.

Most importantly, Cubase works fine, as do all the plugins. I had some issues with games, but that's been resolved.

My PC is now future proofed for the foreseeable, which is why I did it.

Suddenly my PC wants to upgrade to Windows 11 this morning. Is it likely to break anything? Yubikey security, software incompatibilities etc.? It's a rather aggressive prompt, which doesn't mention anything about the upgrade option persisting if you decline right now, but I assume if I decline the upgrade option will be there in settings?

I had the notification about upgrading, I declined but that notification is still there. I shall upgrade soon I think.

I actually prefer Windows 11 GUI now i've been using it a while.

Just seems snappier and more intuitive

Can't speak of any major performance differences that are glaringly obvious, but its running smoothly apart from a weird boot with one monitor off (But I think that was a "bunk" boot, as I call them)

My main audio laptop has been on W11 since it released; it's a Ryzen laptop; I don't recall any serious issues even just after launch, but I don't do a lot of very intensive or CPU stressful work on it. It's been ticking a long nicely with no issues from external gear or internal components, e.g. Nvidia drivers. It just "works", which is ideal. My old audio laptop is an older i7 that's not compatible, otherwise I'd upgrade that too, as I also prefer the W11 GUI and user experience.

I've not been offered the WIN 11 upgrade yet, but Windows update says I can use it just when it's available.

Yet a friend has a laptop that's offering him the update now.

Only difference is his is an intel CPU mines AMD. Literally only difference.

Anyone else had the offer of the update yet in the UK ?

Microsoft is rolling out Win11 slowly. That's why some users receive the upgrade offer earlier than others. This why they avoid high server loads and make sure that everything runs smoothly.

I got a Laptop with a Ryzen 2500U CPU that is not very old, but unsupported by Win11. These CPUs do not get a Win11 upgrade offer because Microsoft claims that they are 'incompatible' - which in fact isn't true at all as they got a TPM chip.

You may have to enable TPM in your BIOS.

I am running Win11 on my gaming machine without problems since the beta. The rest of the computers will stick with Win10 as it works.

From the technical aspect Win10 and Win11 are very similar. That's why stuff that worked on Win10 usually also works on Win11.

I am glad I did, the more I use it, the more I like it.
