Yesterday I became aware thru K V R that a free version of Mackie Tracktion was available for download.

I downloaded it however I could not figure out how or where I get the Register code that Not-For-Resale
Software.

Getting the machine code number was easy but you need that first set of numbers.

If any one here has done that download/registration where did you get that first set of numbers?

Help.

what first set of numbers?
All I did was to start tracktion, get my machine ID numba and paste it into the registration formular. I then got emailed the unlock key.

Maybe that's it. Doesn't that show up somewhere in Tracktion? If midiw is expecting to find it somewhere on the website...

well he wrote getting the number was easy so i suppose he already knew it can be found in tracktion's about-box...

First of all let me say thanks for the interest/replies to my problem.

In order to claim my free Tracktion NFR license I need to enter a NFR code at this www site

I got the the machine code by simply selecting "About" within Traction.

However I need a Tracktion NFR code but have no idea where I get that code.

I tried just entering the machine code with no luck breaking thru.

Aha! I hear the NFR code is a new thing. Perhaps having none to begin with was a mistake on their part...

Looks like I'm cooked unless I can track down the magazine that was giving away Traction. Aparantly there was a magazine that was giving the program and providing a www link or something like that to get the code.

Could you please clarify your comment.

What's the catch to installing/authorizing/running this program? Mackie sezs that it's a not for sale program which could mean just about anything.

it doesn't offer the same upgrade path as the purchased version. That is the difference. You buy V1, and you can upgrade to v2 @ a discount. You use the NFR version and you won't get that deal.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. It's giving away lots of copies, I'm sure, but I would say that guitar players are excellent potential clients for Tracktion. So if V2 has some of those enhancements that remove the few annoyances of Tracktion, this may well have been a genius marketing move. "Sure, you can stick with the NFR version, but the paid version 2 has MIDI that isn't ... underfeatured."

Mackie are still selling Tracktion V1, ergo it isn't a free program. The NFR version was given away as part of a deal with a couple of magazines to create some buzz for the program. It also seems that for a while, whether intentionally or not, Mackie made the NFR publicly available.

Either way, NFRs aren't the same as retail versions. I haven't seen the NFR license so I don't know what restrictions (if any) it has. Quite possibly you can't use the NFR commercially -- maybe someone with the NFR license could clarify what if any differences there are.

That Mackie don't want to actively encourage everybody to use only the NFR version shouldn't come as a surprise though. They still want Tracktion to be a commercial success.

chuck in a few discount deals for Mackie hardware such as Spike for NFR owners and they could easily grab some hardware sales from gutarists who have grown comfortable with their NFR Tracktion too.

I suspect Mackie have a pretty good idea what they want to achieve with this.

Whether they hoover up many MIDI/VSTi musicians with T2 comes down to how good T2 is, but they are certainly well placed to make Tracktion an ideal package for first time 'recording' musicians.
