Rack - yes, synths in rack format, of which the D110 is one. The first rack synths ("dawn of rack") were the Roland MKS modules (1984), and the Octave-Plateau Voyetra 8 (1983).
After those, you're hitting 1985 with the Yamaha TX816, and an increasing amount of rack synth modules being released after that as MIDI gained in ubiquity...
