February 24, 2022 - Cherry Audio is delighted to announce the release of its latest effects plugins, the Rackmode Signal Processors. Rackmode is a bundle of eight plugins that replicate the classic rack-mounted Moog Signal Processors of the 1970s and ‘80s, and includes:
  • Rackmode Vocoder (instrument and effects versions)
  • Rackmode Phaser
  • Rackmode Ring Modulator
  • Rackmode String Filter
  • Rackmode Frequency Shifter
  • Rackmode Graphic EQ
  • Rackmode Parametric EQ
A STACK OF HISTORIC PROPORTIONS

In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Moog (then owned by Norlin Music, Inc.) wanted to extend their reach further into the production studio. One effort was the Signal Processor family of rack-mounted products featuring the 16 Channel Vocoder, 12 Stage Phaser, and the Ten Band Graphic and Three Band Parametric Equalizers. Other related rack products were the Frequency Shifter and Ring Modulator, based on the designs of pioneer Harald Bode, and the singular String Filter created by Moog's Custom Engineering group.

The Moog Signal Processors have found a place in production facilities worldwide, both past and present. Artists like Wendy Carlos, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter, Genesis, Jan Hammer, Mouse on Mars, and Coldplay have used them to shape their distinctive sounds. And producers as diverse as Giorgio Moroder, Mike Elizondo, and Sylvia Massy have cited these black boxes as treasured parts of their studio gear. Today these units are increasingly scarce and fetch prices far above their original value – that is, if they can be found at all.

MAKING SOUND EFFECTIVE

Our Rackmode Signal Processors bundle represents the first time this entire line of renowned analog treasures has been recreated as virtual effects. Rackmode also marks our latest collaboration with award-winning synth designer and DSP legend Mark Barton (MRB), who modeled the circuit-precise emulations based on the original rack-mounted hardware. The eight Rackmode Signal Processor plugins include:
  • Rackmode Vocoder - Rackmode includes two versions for this 16 channel classic: an instrument plugin with a built-in polyphonic dual oscillator, and an effects plugin to modify other input formats and DAW tracks for unlimited processing flexibility.
  • Rackmode Phaser - Based upon the definitive 12 stage original known for its lush, sweeping textures.
  • Rackmode Ring Modulator - Based on Moog's Harald Bode Ring Modulator with Squelch control.
  • Rackmode String Filter - This effect utilizes filter arrays that mimic acoustic string instruments, drawing from the extremely rare system created by Moog’s Custom Engineering Group.
  • Rackmode Frequency Shifter - Mixes two external inputs or sidechains a single input with its own built-in oscillator. The Frequency Shifter creates colorful, often metallic effects by modifying the ratio of incoming frequency components.
  • Rackmode Graphic EQ - Ten selectable frequency bands with Drive and Gain controls, capable of creating exotic effects when used with other instruments and effects.
  • Rackmode Parametric EQ - Three bands for sculpting Low, Mid, and High-frequency ranges.

    BACK TO THE FUTURE

We have expanded these effects with additional features aimed at today's music producers, including presets, LFOs, stereo processing, and full Apple Silicon M1 native support. And speaking of authenticity, these effects capture not only the deep sounds and capabilities of the original Signal Processor line, but also the elegant look and heritage of the rack-mounted enclosures.

Cherry Audio's Rackmode Signal Processors collection represents a first-time opportunity for producers to explore these studio-quality vintage effects. When combined with today's modern production workflow, experimentation will lead to inspiration, and an old approach to sound can unexpectedly result in something completely new.

    A MONUMENTAL VALUE

Along with our musical engineering expertise, Cherry Audio strives to provide vintage sound at a fraction of the cost of the original hardware. If tracked down and purchased today, the original Moog hardware would cost over $20,000. Cherry Audio is introducing the entire Rackmode Signal Processors bundle at an unheard-of price of $99, less than $13 per plugin!

The Cherry Audio Rackmode Signal Processors collection is available now at cherryaudio.com and authorized Cherry Audio resellers worldwide for only $99 (list $129). Visit our site for more product details and extensive sound demos. The collection is available for Windows and macOS in AU, VST, VST3, AAX, and standalone formats, with a free seven-day trial period. It includes full native support for Apple's M1 processor and is fully compatible with macOS 12 Monterey.

Are these circuit models, or is it more a case of you took existing DSP blocks from whatever you use to make your modular elements in Voltage Modular and parameterised them similar to that of the Moog processors?

Yes, these are all circuit-modelled recreations of the original hardware, with custom DSP crafted by DSP pioneer and vintage synth legend Mark Barton. Tremendous efforts were made to match the unique circuit designs of the original Moog hardware, and then these designs were taken to the next level with stereo processing, tempo-syncable LFOs, unique new vocoder waveforms, and more.

There was an issue that was preventing the download links from showing up properly in the Demos library, but that's been fixed. Sorry about that!

You can download Rackmode Signal Processors from the product download link here: https://cherryaudio.com/products/rackmode/download

Enjoy!

The inevitable question… coming to VM?

I started messing with the demo. Ok, I get it. Very nice. I've only used the phaser in real life and they were always in some dusty guitar rack so I never really got a sense of it. These processors sounds pretty nice and, surprisingly, bring some new things to the table. Take your GAS pills, kids! :borg:

just tried em before tea, and the only one i would really keep is the frequency shifter. i don't know how different the circuit is here from the MoogerFoogers but these don't saturate the feedback loops of the phaser and ring mod when you drive them which i've noticed is a thing on most guitar pedal and old early 80ies to 70ies rack mount modulation gear i've been through at one time or another. also owned the Moog EQ at one point in time when i heard rumours about it being used on a lot of Basic Channels early stuff. i distintinctly remember that the saturation was in the bands and not global, but it seems they've done what most plugin developers do and chucked the nonlinearities at the end, and to boot this is just a hard clipper. absolutely nothing special to be gained by driving these sadly(same clipper on most of them that have that misleading IMHO"drive"knob it seems as well no anti-aliasing either). the phaser sounds good but you can't really use high feedback with it since the resonance pulls away from the input beyond a certain amount unlike the MoogerFooger

i would of bought the frequency shifter already but it sadly cuts off everything above about 9-10khz there abouts (didn't check on a spectrum analyser, so might be off a khz or two)i am assuming this is part of the original design, but would you consider an option where it leaves the spectrum untouched. it doesn't seem like that is all that useful to be honest, but it's a great sounding frequency shifter besides that one slight niggle

Is there any difference between the VM900 1630 Frequency Shifter (which I already have) and the rackmode module?

Based on what Mark Barton said on the Cherry Audio forums, they are the same; he was talking about the Rackmode version in the Rackmode module bundle, not the Rackmode effects bundle, so there are really 3 versions.

Yeah it's the Rackmode module bundle I'm interested in but it sounds like those of us who have the other Moog modules bundle should maybe get a cross grade price

I think we do. I own the VM 900 bundle, and I'm seeing the Rackmode module bundle for $30 less than its regular price. Unless there's currently a sale on it.

That's odd - I'm seeing Rackmode Effects Bundle at $99 regardless of whether I am logged in or out - and the modules for $69 but they are on sale - no additional reduction for me for owning the VM 900 bundle bundle

I hadn't known when the module bundle was released; I've been in the hospital for several weeks. It is strange that there isn't a discount for customers who already have the VM900 bundle.
