help me get my i7 3630QM to run Win10 or 7 at all

heya-
I've had a terribly bad what I think is a virus problem on this laptop.
I booted it again today to see what I could do.
I have reinstalled Win10 3 times trying to right it.
It is behaving ok now,
heavy cpu though.
I was wondering if any of the tech gurus could tell me for sure about this processor's possible compatibility with Win11?
-it will never run it?
Nice old lappy with 17" screen, HP Envy dv7
If I could get 11 on it, maybe the virus could not operate

Unless your motherboard came with the TPM 2.0 chip (and most mobos that came with third-generation i-series chips didn't), you won't be able to run Win11. It's unlikely you'd want to install Win11 on a machine that old anyway, since it would still be very slow. There's also no particular reason to believe a virus that runs under Win10 wouldn't run under Win11.

You can pull up Task Manager to see which processes (or apps) are consuming the most of your CPU cycles and either disable them or uninstall them, depending upon what they are. Unless you're fairly sure you've installed a virus (or malware), it's probably just something in Win10 that's causing your issues. Another (though less likely) scenario is that the hard drive is failing. There are ways to check that, starting with CHKDSK /R from an admin-level command prompt.

I have been looking closely at the Task Manager to try see what is problematic,
and today, it's an old problem
Windows Modules Install Worker
is sometimes still consuming say 15%

The virus' behaviour was to make any file- when you edit it, get deleted
-but it's not doing that now

If you’re talking about the Intel Atom processor running Win11, it may be able to run it technically — but it would be virtually unusable, especially for a DAW.

You can disable the Windows Module Installer and Windows Update related services (though the latter one is tricky). Either update every Microsoft or Windows app or OS manually (including what’s in the “Microsoft Store”), or let the Windows Module installer run on its own for a few hours to finish its updates. You could then disable it after that. But a 15% usage wouldn’t necessarily result in the “heavy CPU usage” you mentioned.

Are you 1000% sure you removed the malware? Where does your processor “idle” after you boot and before you load apps? Is it below 20% on average? Higher than 30% on average? Higher than 60%? What’s causing the biggest drain on the CPU?

I tried to install Win7,
but it won't let me. Now I have Win10 disc back in it

..it seems the legacy of the malware can't be overcome atm

in a curious one- in the Win10 install,
it crashes back to startup when clicking 'Performance' in Task Manager

Have you nuked the whole disk, including all existing partitions and the MBR? That should get rid of any malware.

I tried to install Win7,
but it won't let me.

What's the error message? Can you try Win8?

I have now lost the exact message

how do I nuke the 'Master Boot Record'?
I'll try again to format all partitions then

however,
I had Win10 installed,
and tried to install Win7

only the 10 install would boot, after trying the 7 dvd from Win10
it was saying possibly some malicious code from an external(unknown) source was preventing it from installing Win7

I have been trying to boot from cd/dvd all the time, I looked at the bios, and it should boot from dvd/cd first, but something is stopping it from booting the install discs from disc

I can- I can try Win8, which is what it shipped with, just have to purchase the .iso, but I have no dual-layer dvds. Can get some

it's now 'getting files ready for installation' on Win10,
but my erasure of all partitions is bad I think

I think I did get it to install from disc

-now with a fresh Win10 install, I'll see what happens
