What tools to get that FM ultracompressed pre-broadcast radio sound ?

Hi,

I’ve tried everything I can to come as close as possible, but it’s never close enough. I’ve tried a lot of combinations, using custom multiband limiters, dynamic equalizers... it’s simply not THAT sound... Those maximised basses, those tamed high frequencies, this insane volume... (yes, this noise also...)

I’ve read theories, people who simply say "put a phase rotator, use a transient enhancer, a multiband compressor, a multiband limiter, a multiband sausage fattener with OTT to the max and then turn three times on yourself and you’re there"... OK, but the thing is that it’s simply not working. Theory is a thing, result is another. Some people think they know but have never tried anything close.

What plugins would you use to get a true FM sound ? Do anyone of you know what they’re using and what we have in this world that could replace it ? They do have stuff, hardware I suppose, we have plugins... OK, can we mimic the sound ?

Please ignore the FM natural noise and the bandlimit, they’re part of the FM sound but do not take any part in the ultra-maximized sound I’m after.

Thanks a lot ! :tu:

From the title I thought to recommend Audiothing Speakers, but after reading your post, I'm confused. I thought, oh maybe it is asking about FM synth sounds. Then I think it could be about mixing then. The phrase "FM radio sound" is unclear to me.

Perhaps you could say what type of music, instruments, voices.
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

OK, I need to post an audio example, sorry. I’m talking about that crazy-loud flowing sound you hear on the big radios.
Audio example in a couple of minutes...

But sure you came across that website, right?
On the other hand it should serve you with deep knowledge about FM radio processing.

Here is an audio example of the kind of sound I'm after.

How the f**k can that sound be that compressed and limited ? How ?

Thanks, will watch.

At first contact, I'm unsure it's really related to what I'm exactly after. Do you think it is ? :?

I'm not trying to mimic a final FM sound, I'm trying to recreate the insane compression/limiting they're making before broadcast actually.

Any of these useful? Most are 32 bit only but there is one 64 bit in there.

Seems they feature the Stereo Tool VST suite. For processing the signal before broadcasting.

Plus they have an interesting blog. They tell how achieve that insanely loud signal.

Have a try with TB Broadccast (it's in the free v3 legacy plug-ins);

https://www.toneboosters.com/support.html

Designed for that sort of thing.

People of a certain age know exactly what the OP is talking about. It’s “the sound of radio,” that FM radio stations used huge compressor/limiters to squash music to be very loud, so people would listen to their station over quieter music on another station. It was the first “loudness wars,” started back in the 1950’s/1960’s.

Probably more realistic to get one of the older units on the used market than their newest offerings. One of these can be had for less than $500.
