Many cores, high ghz, supports a lot of ram, upgradeable hard drive, great soundcard, and touch screen (does not have to be a 2 in 1 necessarily.) What models could I start looking at?

I have a good powerhouse desktop but I'm not carrying that to gigs. I'm looking for something half as capable in a small touchscreen package.

Also, I just know I'm going to get a lot of flak (most plugins are built for mouse) but what if I want to build plugins optimized for both? It would be a boon for everyone.

Surface Pro would be my recommendation or an Asus UX482 -

I have the previous model and only my second screen is a touchscreen but I'm pretty sure on the new model that they both are. There is also a ROG gaming version that's even gruntier (and more expensive).

What are you looking to spend? What are you looking to run on it? I tackled this question recently and music software is broadly speaking not very cpu intensitive and very easy on the ram. There are excetions for CPU (mostly if they dont have threading and you have a lower clocked CPU) and RAM (big multisampled, usually orchestral instruments).

If you just want "a good one" no matter the price, cant go wrong with a Surface Pro.

If its a device you use as your main production setup, I would try to get a nice one. If you dont need touchscreen, the apple m1s are value for the money (as far as apple is concerned) but it of course has compatibility issues. I was looking for a cheaper touchscreen laptop to use with my hardware and was looking at the lenovo product line. Just beware, most of the lower priced models of any manufacturer have bad screen brightness (250 nits), bad keyboards and trackpads.

In terms of CPU model increase adds very little speed contrary to desktop: the 4 core i3 is only about 3% slower than the according i5 with 4 cores. For a save bet main production laptop i would expect to pay about 1000€ and look for 16gb ram, 512gb ssd (or more if you wanna be fancy), a current year ryzen 5 or 4 core intel (or more). edit: also get a screen with =/>300nits

Also have to consider if you want a 1080p screen or 1440p/4k. Higher res is alot nicer but *some companys* (NI) dont think display scaling is important.

I would say my minimums are touchscreen (absolute must have,) 16GB RAM, 4 cores (but I’d rather have 8+,) nominally 3GHz, and 500GB SSD with the ability to hook up external, and a great soundcard.

Things I do not care about too much are brightness and screen resolution as long as they are average. If it’s touch I do not care about the track pad much, but the keyboard has to be decent or average.

Oh man I just realized the asus has 2 touchscreens an dit has great reviews. I think my search may have ended.

Yeah, I've got the shittiest version available and I really love it. The newer, higher spec models would be absolutely awesome.

Just so you know, the Zephyrus 2nd screen is touch, but the main screen isn’t. Weird eh?

Is yours a UX481?

Pretty cool... this is pretty much what I do with an iPad, minus the actual keyboard (I use geoshred.) I think I might like this setup and replace the real keyboard with an iPad, and the guitar with a bass since I am a bassist.

Mine is indeed a UX481 and its main screen doesn't have touch, either. I'm pretty keen to upgrade, though. I'm just waiting to see when/if Asus release a model with a 12th Gen CPU and I'll probably pick one up through work, using salary sacrifice (so I don't have to pay tax on the money that pays for it).

I will probably get UX482 later this year or a ROG Flip X13 which looks like the best 2in1 (the newer Z13 has Intel instead of AMD Ryzen.)

I kind of like the idea of the Flip as a tablet to go with my iPad, and the UX482 as a laptop but I probably won’t be able to get both anytime soon. The flip is a little cheaper but the ZenBook has more for only slightly more.
