Because Bandcamp was one of the best places to purchase DRM-free and lossless music. And Epic LOVES DRM and is hostile to their user base.

Acquisitions of beloved companies rarely serve the interests of the audience who originally loved the company. But we shall see.

I guess people think of SoundCloud in times like this but that struggled/still struggles to make a profit, very different scenario to band camp. Could simply be a mutual beneficial agreement, Eric get share of profits, BC get more cash to develop sorry more. I'll cost optimism this time.

Not seeing any evidence of DRM on their other similar acquisitions, eg Sketchfab, or Quixel, or Artstation, nor is it enforced on the Epic Store either, or the Unreal Marketplace.teilo wrote: Wed Mar 02, 2022 6:12 pm Because Bandcamp was one of the best places to purchase DRM-free and lossless music. File under 'unsubstantiated FUD'.
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

All I can say is that Bandcamp incorporating DRM would be them practically signing their own death sentence. I mean, DRM doesn't exactly align with the values and statements posted in either of the news/blog posts:

https://www.epicgames.com/site/en-US/ne ... s-and-fans
particularly "fair and open platform". So for now I'll take the "don't worry, ain't gonna happen" attitude.

Things I am pessimistic about:
- Epic is acquiring a whole lot of other companies outside the gaming sphere because they have an overarching plan. That plan is not necessarily going to be what's best for Bandcamp or for musicians or listeners.
- Epic also owns Spotify, which is a much worse ripoff for artists than Bandcamp.
- Epic is getting into NFTs and crypto bullshit.
- It seems like every time a small and cool company gets purchased by a big corporation and they promise not to break things... they go ahead and break things.
We'll see. Tomorrow's Bandcamp Friday, I'm still releasing a new album and buying a bunch of music from Ukraine artists and labels.

I’m cautiously watching what happens but hoping for the best.
I don’t fault Epic for buying up all they can while they have the cash flow from Fortnite. It’s tough to say if the game will have the staying power of Minecraft so if I were them, I’d diversify too.
But I will always worry about what they could decide to do with Bandcamp if they feel it’s not turning the profits they believe it should be.

Nothing in particular about Epic or Tencent but when a large company buys an indie and pinky swears not to mess with it, rule of the thumb is they will, eventually.
And “champions for a fair and open Internet”? Really now?

Maybe Fortnite will get some better music now because what they have now is unbearable.

Actually Fortnite is small potatoes for Epic I'm told. The Epic guy lives where I work, I never met him as he doesn't golf, but I know his neighbor well. We've talked about him on occasion, apparently they make most of their money off the Military. Epic has a hand in all their simulation tech. So despite the ridiculous amounts of money Fortnite brings in no doubt, seemingly it's nothing against government spending.

Epic owns Spotify? I don't think that is true. However, it is true that most of the major labels/music publishers have a financial interest in Spotify.foosnark wrote: Thu Mar 03, 2022 1:36 pm Things I am pessimistic about:
