rules. mmmm

not sure, depends on a few things I guess.

not had too much experience with mastering studios but the last one we went to said he didnt have to do too much (infact he messed it up a bit and the 2nd one fixed it, personal tastes ? )

as far as not doing it yourself and not having the right kit, again im not sure about that.

fwiw I have had music broadcasted on T.V Radio and have also sold cd's to various record companys with no complaints (apart from some forum comments)

I also have a friend that stopped paying £$£$£ to mastering studio and DIY, one infact now has a track doing very well and is featured on many compilations.

im sure there is a right and a wrong way and people would pull my work to bits. tbh I dont care :D

It's up to an individual to choose a method of working. The important question is whether you understand well enough what the 'mastering' treatments are doing. In order to hone your skills in using mastering compression you need an object of comparison, i.e. the dry version. If you always work with a compressor on the master channel you don't get this comparison. Sure, you can switch the compressor off now and then, but then you'll find that your track sounds worse because the levels are wrong and not because the compressor is working some special magic. If you're certain that you understand your tools then you can feel condident in choosing your working method.

Exactly, what matters is the end result. We all have our own ways of working. There is no "wrong" way if the mix sounds awesome in the end.

If the point is to get the mix perfect, and then tweak in the Master suite, how is this ruined by putting the master on the main out?
the thing that's ruined is the nasty anal headcase some people get about doing everythnig like they are told.

you can't master your tracks in your host because god will strike you down.

headquest wrote: Two questions for everyone:

1. What CD burning software do you use (as this is surely related to, and was one reason I have been looking at Audition... although I think the CD burning in this is fairly embyonic, to be honest...)

2. What mastering plugs do you recommend that can be dropped on the master chanel of a standard sequencer (e.g. Tracktion, Live, Sonar, SX2, etc)
Good questions and ones I have/had as well. No-one has answered either of these two questions to my knowledge.

I am very interested in the anwser to question 1 since I have Live 4 and it only saves in WAV or AIFF formats. I want to burn CD's as well.

As for question 2, I already purchased Ozone 3 for my mastering tools and have been very impressed with them up to this point. IMO, I think they're way underpriced for the quality FX you get.

Anyone have ideas for his first question?

1: Tools for purposes, no one-does-all! Burning CDs is not something I expect a sequencer or audio editor (let alone Windows Media Player!) to handle for me. I used the software that came with the CDR-drive for quite a while, think it was Easy-On-CD or Easy-CD-Creator. Nero does it now.

I think its important that you can specify per track weather you need lead-in silence (thats the Q-track, right ??)

Samplitude Professional does all for me. It's a sequencer, a very good audio editor, it burns CDs (and audio DVDs since V8 ) AND it comes with a nice set of mastering FX :D

I have heard about Adobe Audition that i can make enhance the sidebands. Is that true?

This results in a more stereo widen effect. Does anybody know how this effect is titled/named?

I'm searching for this overall and everywhere-effect: You put the headphones on your ears; the signal is everywhere.

Wow - this is an ancient thread! :-o

Since my posts before, I now have - and totally love - Adobe Audition.

I use it for audio editing, for all mastering, and for CD burning.

Regarding the CD burning it is far better than I thought when I glanced in the demo. In fact it is very easy to control the lead-in to each track/PQ points. Although I still use Nero for basic CD copying tasks, I use Audition to burn the original with more flexibility and directly from the mastering application. The dithering down process is included in the burn routine.

The only down side is that Audition's multitrack facilities and ReWire host status are SO GOOD that they have made Tracktion pretty much redundant for me personally now (I also use Live 4 and Reason for the MIDI aspects of a track, both of which can be ReWire slaves within Audition).

I'm not totally sure what you mean, but you can check out the full featured - nothing diabled - save enabled - 30-day demo ("Tryout version") here:

Good luck!
