From Reddit:
Custom sound font in "MidiEditor"
I created a custom sound font, but I don't know how to tell the program to use it. Very new to this, thanks.

You should download and install coolsoft virtualmidisynth. After you open it press the "+" button to add a soundfont. Then go to the "MIDI Mapper" tab and set the default midi out device and default windows media player device to "virtualmidisynth #1". hope this helps. Also just saying, I use an awesome "realistic" soundfont to play GM and GS midi files. There are a ton of "realistic" soundfonts out there on the internet, and in my opinion, SGM is the best one. Still haven't found any soundfonts for XG midi files, so I'm making my own.
