Is Studio 1 the only realistic alternative to Cubase ?

Nothing has changed in regard the VST2 issue on Windows yet. I am hoping it never does.

Wasn't there something like VST2 support will be dropped on Windows Cubase within the next 24 months aswell?
Or was this just some gossip?

It looks like they are getting a head start with stopping VST2 in Cubase 12 with the removal of four apps - Loopmash, Mystic, Prologue and Spector. I now have them back and working with no problems other than the presets are not functioning. They say there are technical reasons for removing them. But by following a few simple instructions we can now get them working in Cubase 12.

I could consider Cubase now since it doesn’t need the dongle anymore. But I am waiting for the demo to be available (the free trial version will be released soon - no any info /estimated time when it will be).

S1 is very nice. But I would really like to try Cubase12 how it feels/compares. Especially the workflow S1 vs Cubase12.

I really don’t like in S1 the pen & eraser function in piano roll. I know I can use the arrow tool for drawing and then the eraser tool isn’t automatically there… but I find the double clicking a bit frustrating compared to single click with the pen…

Studio One is vastly superior in looks, feel and workflow in comparison to Cubase. It is pretty much a modern version of Cubase that forgoes older conventions. Cubase looks old with it's curved corners, UI elements that look like they came Magix Music Maker 20 years ago, and a workflow that generally feels like a slog in comparison. Studio One does have smart tool features which you should explore.

I'm a programmer, needed a Windows machine. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Like every one of those I've used, it's poor, bendy plastic, useless trackpad and awful high dot pitch screen. I purchased it used with same or very similar specs to my old MBP. That said, its one saving grace is that it's not as loud as the MBP when the fan kicks on.

Unlike many people, I've made careful and considered choices in hardware and software. There is no "perfect" system, just a trade-off between pros and cons and one's personal needs. If I could, I'd have a Mac laptop that dual-booted between Windows 7 (or XP SP 2) and Mavericks (macOS 10.9). I'd program in C, C++11, Java 1.6, etc. I'd use a browser that browsed webpages and let me bookmark them. I don't need a web browser that can wash the baby and babysit the dog.

For me, these were the apex of each of them and instead of improving them with needed bug fixes, the maintainers have just piled on more and more utter garbage. Anyway, those are my opinions, of which some or all would disagree.

Now, if we could get back on topic, DP is another option, although I believe S1 is the most "Cubase-like" if that's the goal here. However, DP is far more mature, being roughly the same age as Cubase, and pretty much has feature-parity. Some things may be better implemented, other things not so much. And it's Apple Silicon compatible and supports VST2.

Can someone please confirm if they have updated the GUI in Cubase 12? I'm not talking about the main GUI of the arrangement window or the mix console as such, but the menu's on the inside and the dialogue boxes and etc etc. Do they still look like the old style 90s or early 20s design? I know they have resized the scroll bars and made them a bit thicker, but apart from that I couldn't notice anything else from the videos I watched online. I'm not a Cubase user, although I do have a copy of Cubase LE and have tried it personally. I've used FL Studio in the past (don't think I'll be going back to that like ever) and used Ableton Live extensively (used the 90 day trial version like 4 times on different machines, but never owned a suite license (have had intro & lite). I have made a lot of my music in Ableton but I do not have a full license and am not willing to spend for the Suite version at the moment (probably at some point in the future if needed). I even use Studio One 5 for mixing and mastering. I'm trying to keep it a one stop shop for everything (recording, production, mixing, mastering) and I've really found myself attracted to Cubase lately. It comes with a lot of Virtual Instruments/sounds (Retrologue, Padshop, Halion, Groove Agent) and the Pro version has everything needed for mixing & mastering as well. Previously I wasn't able to get into Cubase because of the dongle, but now that it seems to be out of the way, I think I could really get into it. I'm just curious if the GUI will ever be updated to be more consistent or modern looking at all, because at the moment it looks kinda oldish and I'm not sure if anything has been updated for Cubase 12, as there isn't a demo version available yet (waiting for this). I know it is not a big deal and I could probably get over it, but I have in the past switched DAWs because of the visual appeal. This was a big big reason I switched to Ableton from FL Studio. I just couldn't stand the greyish & unorganized look of FL Studio (I know they are updating the GUI in FL 21, but I don't think I can go back to that workflow anymore), and while Cubase has some level of customization options available, most of the old looking dialogue boxes or menus are baked into the main GUI and cannot be personalized. PS: I could get Cubase Pro for a lot lesser than the full price because they provide a Competitive Crossgrade option.

This whole dropping of VST2 from Cubase was because of bloody mac's.

Why can't they just keep them in Windows versions ? Let Cubase still open VST2 plugins LIKE IT DOES NOW.

I know they are trying to push the VST3 platform now, but surely they must be aware of the people who'll dump Cubase.

I actually had a reply from their "rep" about this, and well basically he couldnt give a sh!t . Typical attitude from Steinberg.

Nobody stops you from going on using Cubase 12 though. Especially on Windows where you don't run into danger messing everything up on the next major OS version update.

But I have to miss out on the new updates , like in C12 I really want to get using, like the group audiowarp which I have been hoping for forever.

So when C13 ,14, drops when eventually VST2 is dropped, that's where my time with Cubase ends, unless I can get really viable replacements for the VST2 plugins that I cannot do without , although I am working on a different solution that might actually make this irrelevant.

if you like the look of the main arranger/mixer then old looking menus won't cause too much problems you will use the shorkeys exclusive anyway
