Machine Drum is very cool. I hear they just upgraded the OS for it too. I think endmusik has one, you may want to pm him with some questions about it. Expensive but very cool.
Otherwise, I'd likely get Microtonic and go out and get a dedicated used laptop for cheap. The Korg Electribe things are fun, and I've heard some people do some cool stuff with them, but they are very limited in terms of the sounds you can program. Still, they're really inexpensive for the quality.

I checked out the Electribe, but was afraid of being limited. I like the big kicks too! But I might be goin any direction, so I need a wide range.

The SR16 has been around for at least 15 years and still retails at like, i forget the price, but not cheap, there's gotta be something to it.
I have one myself but it's broken, a friend of mine has one. for bread and butter
accoustic sounds it's got to be one of the best ( I strongly suspect Ultra Vivid Scene used it for the Joy 1967-1990 album, which is fantastic!).
Some dodgy Russian sample site had all of its 200+ samples up last year, i grabbed them, don't know how legal it is
, but heck, mine was broken!

never used one myself, but i always heard very good things about the sequencer and they are apparently rather fun to use.mr.me wrote:...Or the Yamaha Rm1x, has enybody checked these out?
another one to look into is the emu PX-7. its got the same engine, filters, and effects as their other synths...and the same sequencer thats in their other command stations...but with a sample set thats almost completely dedicated to drums. plus you get the option to add other sound expansions to it...like the xtreme lead or mo'phat.
if i was to go for a hardware drum machine right now, a used PX-7 would be the one i'd be looking at the most (prefferably with the xtreme lead expansion in it.)
