Aren't the Mono and Poly buttons under the preset name the INIT patches?

One is a mono INIT patch. The other Poly.

Post

Yes, but apparently those don't work in demo mode.. Strange oversight/decision.

Didn't realize that. Yeah, that's just bizarre.

I disagree, because the workflow here is perfect, the way GForce did it is brilliant. There's individual, "group" and "offset" options. It means you first set stuff to 0%, then you quickly adjust say envelopes and filter freq and resonance eyeball to a certain position (be it 9 or 12 clock, doesn't matter), and once you got everything "around" somewhere you like (to create deviation), you can now use the offset knob to adjust them together. I think this ability to do it individually so quickly (because you don't need to access "backside menu" for voice cards like say Tal J8) is better workflow wise imo, of course it takes up a lot more screenspace but it ends up being quicker way to get the desired deviations for individual voices. If you went too wide somewhere say with individual osc tunings, then you can just activate group and reset all osc freqs, and do individually again, I like this workflow a lot.

Oh and, poly unison on GForce sounds better than bx_oberhousen.

Not in my testing it didn't. Not that I could be arsed trying to make anything from scratch, it was just way too much hassle. Nothing in the preset patches gave me the impression OB-E sounded any better than bx_oberhausen. CPU use wasn't any better, either, and I only paid $30 for oberhausen, not the $300 GForce think their thing is worth. Maybe at Obsession money but what GForce are asking is just ridiculous for what they're offering.

Thanks for the heads up. Now I just want them to get impOSCar as a vst3.

Of the boat loads of softsynths I've got, I like the sound of GForce stuff the most.

Be careful, it moved all my user configuration into a v1 folder. Including my registration info. But you can copy it back into the ob-e folder .

edit: found that on mac it moves your preferences to a v1 folder, pc remains unchanged.

This isn't by far your first post in which you applaud BX Oberhausen. And its obvious why ...

You're simply right here! BX Oberhausen does have a stellar sound quality. I agree with all you wrote above.
I too got it for a discounted price and it has served me well giving instant inspiration everytime I load it on a track. It's one the very best vst synths I've ever heard.

That doesn't mean OB-E isn't a good synth, because it is. We simply may have been spoiled by BX Oberhausen though. Soundwise it's still the king of SEM emulations. OB-E is a good choice if you want more flexibility and options.
The more I hang around at KVR the less music I make.

I’ve never used an SEM, so I won’t comment as to what the king is. I’ll trust Tom Oberheim on that one. If all you wanna use it for our basic sounds, the plug and alliance version is fine probably the way to go. Much easier to program and get quick results. Nothing wrong with that. I like its filter also. Didn’t do a direct compare to this one, but my memory tells me they have very different characters.

Where the G-Force version shines is that you’ve got eight individual monophonic synths that can have different oscillators, different tunings, and do things that just wouldn’t be possible in the Plugin Alliance version. GForce also did some clever things to make programming easier, which are much appreciated. But it’s still a huge, convoluted GUI. So was the original hardware though.

Nothing wrong with having multiple options.

Post

But I can load up 8 individual bx-oberhausens if I want/need to so the whole 8 separate synths thing is a bit pointless ITB, don't you think? And you can do some serious mucking about with individual voices in Obsession (and Diva?), too, so it's not even much of a trick, really.

Absolutely, they are both good and it's really the price that stops me buying OB-E. In a world where you can get bx_oberhausen for $20 and Obsession is $99, I just can't see how OB-E is worth $200 and I'm not so self-indulgent that I'll knowingly allow myself to be ripped off like that.

Who knew synths could make such boring sounds? It's interesting, though, because that's the first time I've seen a SEM in perspective and it's a lot bigger than I thought it would be. The original Oberheim 8 Voice must have been the size of a piano!

I think it would be nice to be able to dial in delay times smaller than 10 milliseconds to create some lush chorus and flanging effects, especially since we have cross-feedback and modulation controls in the delay, which is really cool. I can SORTA KINDA do that with un-synced delay times between 10-20 milliseconds, but it's not the same as a classic Juno-style chorus. If we could just get some really beautiful modulation effects going, OB-E could be capable of THE warmest, thickest pads EVAR.
