Only if you live inside Apple's walled garden and you can't see out into the rest of the world. Just look at this thread - everyone taking Apple at their word, nobody questioning how it might stack-up in the real world, where most of Apple's claims fall well short in independent testing. Apple are the absolute kings of spin and you guys just eat it up as though they'd never, ever exaggerated anything, when the reality is that they exaggerate pretty much everything. I’m just about to hit 4 years on my iMac. I resisted jumping on the M1 mini and I’m glad I did. I can’t justify the Ultra but the Max should be perfect for my needs.

I’m not a fan of their pricing on memory. It’s an extra $200 to bump it up from 512 to 1 Terabyte.

Yeah, everything else I'm ok with, even their price on internal memory. It's just the price of SSDs and, more importantly, that you can't easily replace them. That challenges the idea that it can be a long term machine. I keep my machines for a very long time and the thing that does get replaced is the storage drive. A 2TB upgrade from the 512 model is $600. I just put 2TB in my little intel desktop for $200. My i7 mac mini from a decade ago has a 2TB SSD that is off the shelf.

I don't see them going back to user installable hard drives though, so there you go. But that's the thing that would have had me ordering tomorrow. Put in three bog standard M.2 NVME slots that can function as a bog standard boot drive and mind would have already been on order.

I’ll be looking out for the tear down videos. The missus is still using my old 2011 iMac. I replaced the internal HD with a SSD (also off the shelf) after the HD died. I honestly can’t believe we’ve been able to extend its life this long, but I love that it was possible.

My current machine is from 2017 and while it has served me and my music well, it will be time for me to get a new machine eventually and this seems to be the Mac Mini Pro that I have been waiting for, just under a new name. It doesn't matter to me what it's called, what matters is that these machines seem great. I will take a few days to think about which exact config I want. I'll be getting the Max, that will be more than sufficient for my needs and my setup.

I'm been waiting on making the transition to Apple silicon for a while, my wife even upgraded to an M1 Mac Mini a while back, but this Apple Studio machine will be my first Apple silicon machine. No more hackintoshes for me.

I think that Apple hit it out of the ballpark with these machines.

I just know that my projects choke on my 8-core Intel machine, but not on my M1 MacBook Pro.

Funny also that you harp on about taking Apple at their word when it's Intel that has been caught using rigged benchmarks time and time again. Seems like they've been doing that pretty consistently since at least 2000.

It's not just Intel, many companies outright cheat and lie on their benchmarks. Samsung also comes to mind, having been busted a few times in the past with fraudulent benchmarks.

I remember various times when Apple significantly overstated something... bordering on a lie.

However, their statements and stats about the M1 line have been fairly accurate. And there are already plenty of benchmarks for the M1 Max and the M1 Ultra is gonna be close to double for multi-core performance.

The M1 Ultra will make one helluva graphics machine... and it can easily be dropped into ones backpack if one wants to move between studio and home. I'm curious about fan noise under heavy load.

This might be the moment when I'm moving to M1s. Not cheap that for sure - but damn... it feels like Apple really have thought about what users want this time. SD card reader? Just that alone almost sold it to me.

I really need to make a list of all my apps and see what is incompatible and how much money it will cost to update existing plugins. But damn... this is more what I've been waiting for. Effing perfect.

Funny, because if you read the article it's actually all about how Intel was making less efficient CPUs that ran at higher clock rates in order to market Pentium 4s as "faster." So the villain of the story is once again Intel, not Apple.
