I loaded MT Power Drum Kit 2 into Waveform Free and created a step clip for it. The names of the drum notes in the clip dont' exactly match MT's sounds, and MT has more sounds than there are names.
I started editing the sounds of the existing names in the clip and adding new names for the extra sounds but then thought this is silly and unnecessary - surely everyone doesn't do this. What have I missed? I've searched but don't know what to search for. Is there a way to make a drum plugin automatically advertise its own note names to the DAW? I don't believe everyone does this manually for every plugin. TIA.
Beginner question: mapping MT Power Drum Kit note names in Waveform

I found the solution which I'll write here in case it helps someone else.
The problem is that using MT Power Drum Kit 2 in a Step Clip in Tracktion Waveform doesn't show the right drum names. You could edit/add the names of the Step Clip channels manually, but the proper thing is to load a MIDI note names map for the VST using the track's Actions menu.
You have to be using a MIDI clip, not a Step Clip. Click on the track header to focus it, go to the Actions menu in the Browser (not the Actions button in the bottom-left menu). 'Load MIDI note names map' is at the bottom of the menu, but there's no indication that the menu scrolls, I only noticed by accident. Click that, navigate to the folder containing MT Power Drum Kit 2.txt that I assume MT adds when you install it (for me it's C:\Users\Pictures\AppData\Roaming\Tracktion\Waveform\MIDI Note Name Maps) and select it. In the MIDI editor (either inline or dedicated) you should now see MT's own labels if you zoom in enough.
It doesn't work in a Step Clip though. If anyone knows how to do that please say.
While this fixed the problem, it took loads of searching/guessing and was really frustrating. The user guide had nothing. Googling found pretty much nothing, only two posts on KVR, neither with a solution. Once I'd stumbled on learning I needed the 'Load MIDI note names map' menu item I even searched Waveform's .exe file in a hex editor, and found it which gave me hope to carry on.
Because this problem must arise for every person who uses MT Power Drum Kit in Waveform, but Google only found 1 or 2 people asking about it over the last several years, it makes me wonder how many people use Waveform. When I Google somethng in any area of life and get essentially no hits, it's a sign that I've badly misunderstood or the thing doesn't actually exist. No replies yet on here or Reddit where I xposted hints at the latter.

Just an FYI, there is a dedicated Tracktion forum here: viewforum.php?f=22
It includes information regarding how to add drum names to the MIDI editor: viewtopic.php?t=483781
It looks like this process doesn't work for the step clips, as you mention. That's weird because plugins that somehow report their maps automatically like BFD3 not only fill in that information but also overload it.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Hi and thanks for replying. That thread was one of the two I found, but I only found 'Load MIDI note names map' in Waveform afterwards so didn't get much from it at first. It's a shame about not working in step clips but I can live with that - composing drums in the MIDI editor seems pretty much the same kind of thing.
