The Studios aren't totally silent though.
IIRC, in the presentation yesterday, they were said to be “very quiet in most cases“

But of course i agree with noise level being a huge factor.
Nothing is stopping you from building a “silent“ PC either though.
But hey, the insanely huge fans inside them surely are there for some reason

I watched the presentation live and was surprised that they made such a big deal about the fans. It seems that boosting the clock speed of Apple silicon increases the heat substantially much the same as it does in x86-64 architecture. A good solution though.

Haven't watched the full presentation, but are the clock speeds really boosted?
Single core performance still seems to be exactly the same as in the MBA from 2020.
The big boost in performance (and rising heat issues) solely seem to come from more cores running in parallel.

When I can get into a Mac and change the SSD and Ram without a heat gun and solder iron I'll then consider them . I really wish they'd NOT solder the stuff , I can deal with the putty knife and blow dryer but soldering stuff ? Wow ...

That seems to be one of their biggest business models though:
Get people on board with some decent prices, but make sure to also sell some super overpriced configurations that 0.00001% of people really require, but at the very least 20-30% if not more of the not too tech savvy followers buy anyway as they are believing that they're actually needing that much

Apple's pricing follows the same sort of logic as what's going on in the plugin world. Software companies know that people are more likely to spend small amounts regularly, since it subjectively feels like less expenditure in the moment, but probably adds up to more over the long run than buying one more fully-featured product. Apple knows that people tend to think of price in terms of ratios rather than absolutes, so the $100 extra or so for ssd uprade tends to be psychologically regarded as a small increase over the total expenditure which is already large. Dubious, but then human behaviour is generally not rational.

Yes, my bad, I am sure you are right about the extra cores producing the heat. I just sort of assumed they must have boosted the clock from 3,2 GHz to get the extra speed but now I see that the Ultra has a total of 84 cores which explains the need for bigger fans.

i think its pretty simple. if you need professional tools to work with and don't care about the money, go for apple.
most time the people moaning about apple are those who never worked with these Os.

Well, you need to convince yourself its worth the money. Not sure what your basing that fantasy on but its not anything concrete. Mac owners just ignore the problems such as recent memory leaks, M series battery life being 5 hours rather than 20. SSDs waering out sooner than they should. Yea light years ahead lol.

Yes, unfortunately The studio is certainly awesome, but unfortunately also quite expensive

Well, you need to convince yourself its worth the money. Not sure what your basing that fantasy on but its not anything concrete. This is a replacement for the Intel Mini, which had a much higher price point than the M1 Mini. The M1 Max version of the Studio is only a couple hundred more than a similarly equipped Intel Mini, but much faster and with better expansion.

But it's also an iMac Pro replacement when paired with the Studio Display.

When I was still a working professional (retired now), one weeks graphics work easily paid for one of these new Mac Studio machines. Of course I cared about money, but the cost of this machine was insignificant and any improvement in productivity was well worth it.

But for a desktop, whilst it's nice to have a small form factor, in many cases it makes no real difference, and it's more useful to have customisable RAM and SSD.

Well, Apple users pretty much gave up customizability a long time ago.
