If you had to use only two DAWs (third party VSTs allowed) what would they be?

All bases covered, for my purposes anyway. Two workflows for two needs.
Just wondering: does Reaper have a notation feature (of any type, not necessarily symphonic level)?

Yes, it does. No, not necessarily symphonic level, from what little I understand of all that.

Honestly, if I had a need for exactly that, neither Live nor Reaper would be places I’d even look.

Out of curiosity, which DAWs can manage that?

As far as I know, only Cubase has something integrated within the DAW that (I think) approaches it. I'm not sure if Hans Zimmer, for example, uses Cubase for that or ports it over to Finale via MIDI Standard File. Studio One 5, however, allows for sharing of information in time with Notion and it works really well. Notion is a bit shy, however, on some of the markings, but it would get the job done for probably 95% of anything one needs to write in everyday life. Its markings are just not on Finale level. But then again, I'm not sure anything comes up to Finale's level for notation.

Interesting. Well, if I ever need higher level notation functionality, I’ll . . . probably just use a separate program too.

Quite the bewildering array of DAWs these days, each with a bunch of notable strengths and weaknesses. Still, using (for example) a smart selection of two of them, there isn’t much that any recording studio would be lacking, I imagine. Honestly, for most use cases, one should do it.

Totally agreed with everything you say here. And I really like the fact that DAWs seem to be striving to differentiate. It's true that on one side you have Bitwig and Live and on the other side pretty much everything else, but within those two breakdowns, there are plenty of nuances for those who want to compare features. It's a great time to be a musician.

I didn't mention Cakewalk; it has a notation feature as well, but it's extremely limited, really only suited to printing a quick lead sheet or something of the kind. One could do edits on it that would be transported into the sequencer proper. At one time, Cakewalk owned a notation program called Overture and perhaps there were plans to integrate the two, but it never happened. I'd hate to see someone print out any larger works with just the notes view in Cakewalk.

Logic also has notation functionality, but I know nothing about it or notation software.

ok, which two DAW's are the winners of this poll?..... for fun sake. As far as I can tell you simply gave another DAW poll which are already peppered in this forum. No I didn't scroll through this thread to get a jist of it nor did I vote, there is no way to collectively vote one time for the two DAW's.

Catch22...

Are Cubase and Bitwig still the only DAWs that have browsers that can tag audio files along with presets in 2022?

No winners; that really wasn't the point of the poll and I didn't offer a date to close the poll (this would seem to be a necessary component of a poll in which a "winner" is declared.). It's entertainment value only (or perhaps edu-tainment if one is seriously interested in what others are doing, but that is way beyond the poll's original purpose). With all the individual approaches to composition and the needs of the average DAW user, I'm not certain of what value proclaiming a winner would be. Inevitably, one needs to determine what is appropriate to one's work habits for oneself and invest one's time and money accordingly.

As far as voting for two DAWs, one should be able to do that. You are the first person to mention that this wasn't possible. FWIW (and I'm not sure if being the OP has an effect on this), I was able to vote for two DAWs and I waited several days after starting the poll to do so.

Having said that, a certain paradigm may be discerned: it could be possibly be demonstrated that Bitwig and Live exist for a very different purpose in peoples' minds than the rest of the DAWs mentioned. I say this because there seemed to be a gap in the number of votes those two DAWs received and the others, as if these two applications were splitting a part of the votes that expressed a similar interest, concern, or need. This may not be the reason for the discrepancy in votes, of course, but it's plausible.

Cheers!

Forgive me for just copying a previous post to respond to your one word, but your comment's quoting someone else's original message (brief as it is) doesn't merit any more than a literal rehash of what was previously written-if even that. This is how I replied to the previous comment you quoted when it first appeared in this thread. If you do not appreciate the thread, please follow the suggestion at the end of the first point:

1) Did you see the "entertainment purposes only" disclaimer? Entertainment is intended to amuse. As such, your mileage may vary. If you don't appreciate the thread, simply do not participate.

2) Unless this is your first time to KVR, you surely have noticed that a number of those who use DAWs here have mentioned using more than one application to aid them in their work. While you may not be one of these people, others here certainly have expressed an interest in a subject that touches on the question this poll asks.

3) Many articles in journals that deal with music tech in the past three or so years have made mention directly or in a more roundabout way of the trend to use two complementary DAWs (or more) in the music-making process.

This poll is a refection of a combination of these three factors. While this thread may not be something in which you have an interest, it does not on that basis alone qualify as "stupid."

I tried to follow the DAWs that antic had mentioned in his poll. I also wasn't sure if Renoise was still around. Sorry for the oversight; it was not intended.
