Do you prefer the discrete tiny controls next to scroll bars for zooming a window, or do you like zooming integrated into the scroll bar or scroll areas?

The first option is what you find in Cubase, Logic, Digital Performer, Waveform, Pro Tools, S1, etc.

The second is what you find in Celemony Melodyne, Ableton Live, Bitwig and N-Track Studio, etc. What say you?

It's not like those DAWs only have one option to zoom....

Live can also zoom horizontally with +/- (shift +/-) and vertically with alt.
You can zoom selection horizontally with Z, vertically with Z again, zoom back with x, zoom all project with w, zoom with scroll wheel and hotkeys...

Cubase can also zoom horizontally à la Live ...it's just not very fluid....

Maybe you should just ask which DAW have the bests zoom options if you want to make that kind of pool :P

FL Studio has nice shortcuts for zooming.

Press Ctrl/Cmd and drag the right mouse button to draw a rectangle that will be zoomed into when you release the mouse button.
Cmd/Ctrl and right click anywhere to zoom back out again.

That's all I use in FL, Ctrl/Cmd and the right mouse button do it all. Some other DAWs let you recreate a similar workflow.

Bitwig doesn't, so I mostly middle-click and drag the timeline ruler to zoom in and out and scroll at the same time.

The question was about specific GUI elements, not which DAW makes it easiest to scroll and zoom.

Maybe you should just take the question at face value, and not read things into it.
