I agree that it's good to think for yourself and not just do things because other people are doing. I also think that as a society we need to keep challenging excepted norms because a lot of discrimination and intolerance comes from preconcieved notions of right and wrong. But what's the harm in wanting to be like someone if they are setting a good example and doing good things? Heroes and ideals are useful to societies as long as we realize that they are only ideals (no one is really perfect), not absolutes, and as long as they represent positive values.

I still love this picture from Trent's site:

This one is pretty cool, too (because it has a kitten and a Synthi in it):

Anyway, I think it's very interesting that Trent is using plug-ins like us. I have always admired his work, and I admit to recently being astounded by the 5.1 surrond mix of The Downward Spiral that was just released. I noticed that he thanks Native Instruments in the liner notes, so I guess he was referring to Reaktor there.

More importantly, I think it is interesting how "down-to-earth" Trent has become recently (compared to how reclusive and mysterious he used to be). Reading his site, you can tell that he is more open to sharing personal thoughts and opinions with his fans, and I think that is much more admirable than some of the other popular artists out there today. You have to at least give him some credit for that, as he is clearly trying to portray himself as an everyday person as opposed to a member of the celebrity circus.

uuh. get real!

this is western civ, these 'heroes we should remember are ideals' are real and earn a FUCKLOAD more than you.. and you could too.. if only you can fight your way to the top

in other words, they're up there, getting paid, to remind us that they ARE real, and we can be them if we do the right things.

..to sell us the dream that we work for every day. keep working! you'll get there if you try!

devastating!

f**k, trent has all those toys in his studio, and his shit still somehow ends up sounding like predictable trash with some 12-year-old goth geek's heatbreak BS story on top

the mind boggles

(if you need more evidence for how misguided the idea of 'use this piece of kit and be cool' is, i guess I can't help ya)

What has Trent done recently? :? Even that 'You Are The Perfect Drug' made me nostalgic for old Roxy Music 'Love Is The Drug'...

I still think Downward Spiral is in the top 3 of the 90's... But is he becoming the Orson Welles of industrial goth music? :?

Maybe he'll score Spielbergs remake of The War Of The Worlds atleast, and that will put him back on top?

Oooops. Cat's out of the bag now!

I thought he was all about borrowing production tricks from Ministry, Foetus and Coil, adding a pinch of commercialism, and selling it as 'original' to kids who are too young to remember the folks he's shamelessly imitated. But maybe that's just me.

How anyone could see something that blatantly commercial as in any way challenging is beyond me.

thank-you dystonia

for once i feel i'm not alone in the world

it's not about seeing, is it? it's about hearing... and have you actually listened to anything besides the NIN songs from movies or on the radio? again, commercialism and popularity do not necessarily equal unchallenging, uninspired, derivative drivel, alright?
stop being so elitist, people. you can impress your friends, but otherwise, you're wasting your breath.

How someone can completely dismiss someone else's talents and creativity (in this case, Trent's) when all they have to show is two links to "coming soon" pages is beyond me.

Dude, this entire board is self-referential. It is all about the coolest new gear, hero worship, and buying, buying, buying!! Haven't you moticed this previously? Why not move on to greener pastures? Your 3000+ posts just add to the din here.

Ever notice how, once people become enlightened with The One Truth (tm), they totally abandon a sense of humor? Because, really, it is just so much more self-important to spend one's time lording it over all the plebes like me who will never attain that enlightenment. At least, if they will not repent, we will make them suffer!! "I will beat them about the head and shoulders with my ego!". If one doesn't have a job, so much the better.... more time for posting! Gaia's work is never done!

But, if your goal is really to clear the moneychangers from the temple, you'd better go get some superpowers, like that last guy.

Tell ya what, right now you're sounding like just another embittered Nader voter. What you need, in the most desperate way possible, is to get laid. It's Friday. So, tonight. take two sexual partners of your choosing (if you dare), and call me in the morning. At least you'll be more sociable then.

Because you're being, er, a right c**t currently, and this thread has descended to nothing more than "let's mock xoxos". It is a squabble you cannot win. Surely you used to be more fun than this?

S'okay, I could get aboard that bandwagon, and I'm a NIN fanboy from the first album. I liked him better when he was a f'ed up kid from Cleveland (no joke!) with issues about his religion and sexual orientation. Then at least he was genuinely creepy.

Since he has become Godhead producer/industrial poster boy, he's too far up himself to actually be creating things. He's got nice gear, but he's been self-referential since at least album #2. But I still listen to his crap occasionally. After all, as xoxos says, I *do* love my crap. In fact, I wallow in it.

What's got into xoxos anyway?? He didn't used to be this paranoid.....
