So I'm putting my new system together and getting things all nice and pretty. I currently have a license for cubase 10.5 and it will activate all the previous versions of cubase that I might install. I'm wondering if this will still be the case moving forward. It seems like they changed many other things so I'd hate for my older versions (I still use V8 for day to day work) to get shut off with an update to a version that I'm not necessarily even interested in.

Isn’t the license on a dongle? The only fail imaginable is that Cubase 8 doesn’t run or crashes with the new OS… Just test it and you will know…

Cubase 11 is the last version that uses e-licenser dongle and will let you use older versions.
Cubase 12 has a different licensing system which does not use the dongle and can not active prior versions.
But even though you purchase a license for Cubase 12 you do not surrender your dongle or license on it and can still use it for older versions until it dies or gets lost sometime in the future

Yeah, as above. As long as your dongle works, all older versions are fine. From C12 onwards, no. Though I guess we will have to wait and see if, say C13 will still allow C12 to work etc. I would imagine future licenses will allow old versions from C12 and above but we don't know yet - they may have changed that too...

This was the info I needed. I figured that dropping elicenser support would eventually mean dropping the support of older versions. The license on the dongle only lists the newest version (so you don't actually know that it will run every version until you run them). I am always worried that something like this will get killed in an update without my noticing. The point is that Cubase 8 accepts newer licenses as valid, that is part of your deal with Steinberg. As it didn’t change and doesn’t get updates how should it suddenly reject the license? If so it would be a bug Steinberg would have to fix, no matter how old your version is…

If you upgrade to Cubase 12, your Cubase 10.5 licence will be replaced by an eLicenser licence for "Cubase [edition] 11 (Upgraded to Cubase 12 with Steinberg Licensing)" and you will also obtain a Steinberg Licensing licence for Cubase 12. I fully expect Steinberg Licensing to support downgrades, so when the next version of Cubase comes along (Cubase 14, most likely - I expect Steinberg to skip version 13 and they seem to be going away from 'point 5' releases), those upgrading to that version will be able to run Cubase 12 with their upgraded licence.
You cannot, of course, run an eLicenser protected version of an application if you only have a Steinberg Licensing licence. This is only an issue for those purchasing new Steinberg Licensing licences, rather than an upgrade from an eLicenser version of the application, as they only get a Steinberg Licensing licence.
