Ted Nugent as Musician - NON HPC

I am interested in talking about whether you think Ted Nugent is a decent guitar player, songwriter, performer, etc. without regard to who he is as a person or his political stances.
For my part, I used to like him in 8th grade, got bored by 9th.
I seem to have been hearing a lot more of his stuff lately. "Hey Baby" stands up, "Stranglehold" sounded like Spinal Tap before Spinal Tap. "Wango Tango" is mindless fun. Most of his other songs sound like a lot of other songs that didn't outlive the 70s.
In terms of technical ability, I'd consider him about average, but there were so many people active at the same time that blew him away. Not remotely in the same league as Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Jimmy Page, EVH, Knopfler, Terry Kath, Jeff Beck, etc. Maybe above Ace Frehley, below Eric Clapton.

Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

He did a cover of George Harrison's 'I Want To Tell You' that was interesting, but I've jammed with better players.

Like vurt I I have no idea. I do however recall an interview with Depeche Mode many years back where they said he had shot a wild pig in front of them. Which is nice.

I'd never heard that story before, but it sounds pretty funny. Do you know the circumstances of how they happened to be together in that situation?donkey tugger wrote: Wed Mar 16, 2022 8:31 pm Like vurt I I have no idea. Were they out hunting together or something?
Or did it happen at a concert or something?

A better question is whether or not this thread will last longer than a PC vs Mac thread before getting shutdown.
I think the 8th grade assessment is spot on.

There are other great quotes, but they deviate from the topic, so you can explore them offsite on your own.Nugent didn't sing lead on this; Derek St. Holmes, who was the vocalist with his band, did. Nugent resented the attention Holmes received on stage and eventually sang all the hits himself. His explanation: "There's only one alpha wolf, and that's me."

Oh, it was years ago, in the NME. Can't recall the details, but that always stuck in my mind...Synth Master Jedi wrote: Wed Mar 16, 2022 8:36 pmI'd never heard that story before, but it sounds pretty funny. Which brings back the Spinal Tap reference, according to Wiki
St. Hubbins's name was inspired by Derek St. Holmes, who is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Ted Nugent.

When I was young, I would put on an album and play guitar along with it. I did this with so many albums featuring all sorts of guitarist. I had one Nugent album. I did not try to play along with it, as it seemed to offer little compared to the others. He was good enough for his level of success, he can play guitar as well as the guy from Green Day. He used to do a New Year's Eve show called the Whiplash Bash in Detroit every year. I never wanted to go.
Also, I never thought Clapton was that great as a guitar player. I had a boxed set of his music, and his solos are good--but not on par with a number of his peers. That said, he was part of some fine songs and music, and I do enjoy listening some of his songs. Clapton is God? Not so much.

It already all the words he has spewed over the last decade or so.
It seems that whatever success he had as a musician had been shadowed by his dogmatic and verbose ramblings....

I liked "Stranglehold"; there was something cool and kinda phasey going on that appealed to me. Probably even better on actual drugs than (in? on? at?) meditative states, but such states won't let me listen to his music ever again to find out. Context matters, alas.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!
