He's not a god by any means, but there are many many many worse guitarists than he that are heralded as great, so clearly his politics are tainting quite a few opinions of his skills as a guitarist:

Is he a cocky asshole? Yup. Not a bad guitar player. Personally, I don't like his playing, but I don't like Clapton's either. However, I can recognize they're still decent players.

I recall as well reading in Kerrang (UK METEL magazine) in the 80s his vitrol about the quality of other guitarists - "Jimmy Fumblefingers Page" sticks in the mind. Like I say, I can't actually say I've heard his music much, but this didn't dispose me to want to at the time or since (only became aware of his 'politics' quite recently).

Well, to be fair, Led Zeppelin did steal about 70% of their material. Lol.

Searching the forums suggests otherwise, or at least it doesn't provide enough context 😂😓

Like who?
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

welll I wont say better/worse...but I did see him like I said with Alcatraz opening and Malmsteen was on guitar. We were front row in the balcony and I saw that guitar fly up and down past me a few times. It was a hoot the first time, but the show started becoming monotonous and no other lasting impressions.

Nugent came out and he was very in touch with the audience, he had a big smile the whole time he was playing and there was indeed an interesting energy to the show. I never had a desire to see him again, mostly because then I was a soldier in the reserves and the show really seemed to me to still be trying to appeal to teenyboppers...but it wasnt a bad show.

If anything I left a little more impressed with him than when I walked in  I had heard Malmsteen on late night radio shows a lot and tbh I probably left less impressed with him because the tossing of the guitar was a neat trick but again that surely didnt appeal to me as a guitar player.

One cannot dismiss the fact that there might be one more reason why Alcatraz's show was less impressive...they were the opening act, and face it Nugents ego? I believe it was common practice to throw a blanket over the sound (just a figure of speach) for opening acts and I have no doubt Nugent would do insist on such a thing.
