Sgt. Pepper vs Dark Side?

When I was growing up Stax and Motown were considered classic rock. Heard a fair amount of Sly and Hendrix on the radio too.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

I am that by which all should look to for guidance. I am the taste maker supreme. I’ve got it all figured out, and has been mentioned, I have quite a fetching hat.melomood wrote: Sun Mar 20, 2022 5:31 amWhat is it that makes you so special that Pet Sounds should be negated because you have an unfavorable opinion?zerocrossing wrote: Sun Mar 20, 2022 4:39 am You’ve got to give the nod to Sgt. Pepper’s. First off, it was released 6 years before Dark Side. The Beatles were breaking new ground. There was really nothing like it when it hit. Don’t say “Pet Sounds,” because that album sucks. Is Dark Side more sophisticated? Polished? Mature? Yes to all of it, but there’s something so fresh about Sgt. Pepper’s, even though I put Revolver ahead of it as my favorite Beatle’s album. I think people listen to Paul’s “granny tracks,” as John called them, and puts it off as corny, but in the context of the full album, they’re pretty magical. Like waking up to watch Seals and Croft shows on Saturday morning and finding that there was acid in your Captain Crunch.

Todd has as many crap songs as he has good ones, though. I went back and started a playlist of his good songs and… wow, I had to wade though a lot of sh!t to find the gold.melomood wrote: Sun Mar 20, 2022 7:45 pmThat's because you don't have to be a band to be Brian Eno,or Todd RundgrenBombadil wrote: Sun Mar 20, 2022 6:08 pm To me, the Beatles were the best band in the 60's. Not hard when they’re so busy moping and putting on makeup that they don’t know any scales at all.AnX wrote: Sun Mar 20, 2022 5:47 pm They can if they didn't go there, and don't play basic scales for 13 minutes and call it a 'solo'

Sorry, had to quote myself… have you even listened to Dark Side Of The Moon? It’s truly an expertly crafted piece of music. Of course, no one has to like all music, but to dismiss David Gilmore’s playing as “basic scales,” makes me think you’ve never actually heard it. He’s a master of melody.zerocrossing wrote: Mon Mar 21, 2022 3:07 amNot hard when they’re so busy moping and putting on makeup that they don’t know any scales at all.AnX wrote: Sun Mar 20, 2022 5:47 pm They can if they didn't go there, and don't play basic scales for 13 minutes and call it a 'solo'
One thing I will add that’s on topic, is that as actual musicians, Pink Floyd are better than the Beatles. No doubt about it. As songwriters… well, it’s a taste thing, but I’d say that between Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall, there were many amazing songs in those 6 years. The Beatles basically were done by 69 and started around 63, but man, they wrote an awful lot of songs in a lot of very different styles. Someone brought up Zappa too, and he’s one that I think is excellent… but I don’t like him. Almost not at all, though a few songs are good. Not for me, but I can see the quality. Not sure why people can’t tell the difference between something they don’t like and something that’s not good.

No contest, Sgt Pepper's leaves Dark Side in its dust. I never understood why anyone thought Dark Side of the Moon was any good, I find it boring as batshit and pretentious as all f**k. More pretentious, even, than Supertramp. OTOH, Sgt Pepper's is awesome and changed the face of music for decades afterwards.
How about the Sex Pistols? Just as happened with Sgt Pepper's in the 60s, Never Mind the Bollocks changed the face of rock and roll (and popular music) far more than Pink Floyd ever did. Then in the 80s it was probably Gary Numan (Tubeway Army) and Replicas, via John Foxx and Ultravox, but it was nowhere near as revolutionary as the previous two. In the 90s it was Nirvana and since the turn of the Century it's mostly been an desolate wasteland when it comes to creativity in popular music.Bombadil wrote: Sun Mar 20, 2022 6:08 pmFloyd, imo, was the best band in the 70's. Pink Floyd only seems pretentious if you’re lacking imagination and intellect. Not surprising, most people are.

Ha! They were so self-indulgent and the arrogance to think people would want to listen to it was breathtaking. Of course, a bit of arrogance in rock'n'roll never hurt anyone and it did OK for these guys, too. It was never that big here, either. It got to no. 2 but it wasn't in the chart long enough to make the year end chart. It's kind of strange but Prog Rock was never really a thing in Australia. I was in my late 40s before I ever heard a Rush song, for example, and that only came about because they get a lot of mentions around here so I thought I'd check 'em out.
Here's something interesting - until one minute ago I thought Wish You Were Here was from Dark Side of the Moon. I was looking at their discography just now and noticed it's the name of an album but it's the only Pink Floyd song I ever heard on commercial radio (even though it was never a single) here.

And yet Pink Floyd have sold more albums than 99% of acts out there. So it can't be for lack of imagination and intellect, there must be some other explanation.

Yes. I love the guy, documentaries on him are always fascinating, even his book was good. But his music... lots of good tracks in there for sure but also some really boring, indulgent stuff too, maybe most of it IMHO. But still I can see how expertly crafted it was.zerocrossing wrote: Mon Mar 21, 2022 3:16 amSomeone brought up Zappa too, and he’s one that I think is excellent… but I don’t like him. A couple of friends who are real zappa-fiends were dismayed when I said my favourite LP of his was the Strictly Commercial comp where all the short catchy tunes are compiled...

Beatles are mostly a yawnfest for me I'm afraid - DSOTM and Wish you were here are 2 of my favourite albums.
