Wow, just being on these forums for a day there's probably 5-10 DAWs i've never heard of.
Is there really a market for it and what is the market? Are they just trying to profit off the "DAW switchers"?

Musicians have a tendecy to use obscure things. It's in their blood. They are artists.

Are there too many different types of guitars ? Or do different players prefer different guitars?

Seemingly the number of people who want to make music at home doesn't stop to grow ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also, this is bad for music producers as the number of people who listen to the music probably doesn't grow much.

I think people probably don't switch much once they've got into it, given the time investment needed to master a DAW. I have 4 DAWs at the moment, but only properly use two of them.

It is good that the market is competitive. DAWs could cost more if it wasn't.
Plus, they all borrow innovations from each other. So with more competitors, more DAW developers coming up with new ideas. Then eventually become standardized in DAWs

Have any DAWs disappeared, i.e. folded due to lack of customers?
I can't think of any ATM, so one could argue that there aren't too many - from a free market perspective.

Development costs a lot, but maintaining a website to sell an already developed product doesn’t. So you’re not necessarily going to see a DAW implode in real time in dramatic fashion. But development may slow to a crawl or quietly cease altogether.Yearofthegoat wrote: Wed Mar 23, 2022 8:09 pm Have any DAWs disappeared, i.e. folded due to lack of customers?

What is also quite common is a developer gets acquired by a larger company who can maintain day-to-day operations when the developer no longer can.
A partial list includes:
Opcode (Studio Vision) → Gibson
CoolEdit (Audition) → Adobe
Sonic Foundry (Vegas, ACID) → Sony
Emagic (Logic) → Apple
Steinberg (Cubase, Nuendo) → Pinnacle
DigiDesign (Pro Tools) → Avid
Steinberg (Cubase, Nuendo) → Yamaha
Cakewalk (Sonar) → Bandlab
PreSonus (Studio One) → Fender
This list is in no way complete, but you can see it includes just about every major DAW. Less notable developers don’t have the luxury of being bought out.

I wonder if that has anything to do with there being an entire subforum dedicated to DAWs.Rommelaar wrote: Wed Mar 23, 2022 8:56 pmThere are too many threads about DAWs.
