I wasn't being sarcastic, actually.
What I mean by that is less notable developers with less notable software don't get rescued by a larger company. They just fade away into oblivion if they run into financial trouble. We're not talking about any of them because none of us ever heard of them, or if we had, they're long since forgotten.

As for REAPER, well, Justin Frankel sold WinAmp to AOL for $80 million, who also brought him on as a VP for 5 years with a corporate VP salary. Then I'm sure they paid him a hefty multi-million dollar sum to go away. So he and his company are set for life. He never has to worry about turning a profit.

FWIW -- I clicked through to Saw Studio's site, to see if their prices had come down from the stratosphere. It has links to their store that are actually links to some really dodgy spam/risky sites. I don't know if it's a hijack, or if Saw should be added to the list of dead DAWs.

Sure I get that, but there are other ways to survive than being bought by a big company or going away. All the DAWs I mentioned are still privately owned with various means of survival.

IMO, Reaper is probably doing a lot better than everyone gives it credit for. I know a lot of cheep musicians who went ahead and bought Reaper who would never buy DAWs at the normal price of $200-500. Plus the company has like maybe 4 employees, and that's including Kenny Gio. But yeah, the lack of need for profit is why Reaper will always be whatever Justin wants, not what most people want.

No idea. I used to use v1 as a bit of a testing ground for various things but I never bothered upgrading to v2.

I always figure the developer started making money or was hired by some other company at some price that made developing a DAW seem like throwing money away. Happens with plug ins sometimes.

Or maybe it was a phase he was going through and he grew out of it? I know that's happened to me - about 15 years ago I used to make full skins for everything (which is why I used EnergyXT) but I look back on those days and I can't imagine the version of me that had the drive to do that shit.

if i have two flavours of jam, that's an extra half hour deciding what to have for breakfast

after the hour deciding on cereal or toast

But the best part of having lots of options is narrowing it down to the best. More options means a better best. But ultimately, you're still collapsing your options down from many to one.
