What I mean by that is less notable developers with less notable software don't get rescued by a larger company. They just fade away into oblivion if they run into financial trouble. We're not talking about any of them because none of us ever heard of them, or if we had, they're long since forgotten.
As for REAPER, well, Justin Frankel sold WinAmp to AOL for $80 million, who also brought him on as a VP for 5 years with a corporate VP salary. Then I'm sure they paid him a hefty multi-million dollar sum to go away. So he and his company are set for life. He never has to worry about turning a profit.
