I read in an article recently that the head developer left the company a long time ago and since then, they have only been updating their plugins for compatibility. I don't have a proof but it makes sense. Who in their right mind will stop developing plugins for such a great company.
I mean decapitator ($200) sounds great but have you tried Fabfilter Saturn? ($150)? Its a no brainer!

After ones goes through the "hooo's and the haaa's", after one is awestruck with Dan Worrall's deep voice presenting all the myriad of options at hand (at least all the ones "he has the time for"), allowing one to go from the mundane to the insane... after all that one comes back to earth. one understands that he/she will NEVER possess the level of knowledge of Mr. Worrall, and even if one did, one would have to be EXTREMELY talented to be able to integrate it successfully into one's music. one may also understand that all those colors, virtual patch cable and the overburdening visual presentation as a whole - takes away from one's creativity, whether one's knows about it - or not. then one understands that one merely wanted a simple filter, a simple EQ, a compressor that compresses (not one that comes with a "it CAN compress the way you expect PROVIDING you do this and that and this and that" badge).

That's where Fabfilter falls short (and unfortunately more companies - like Steinberg).
Every second one wastes in terms of creative assets in favor of visual attention - is lost.

And THAT'S where SoundToys win big time (IMO).

Huge news!

They used to bring out a new plugin every year I think Little plate was their last that was four years ago. At least they are still updating, they still sound at the top and I like their gui designs but I'm more and more preferring FabFilter GUIs.

Post

Afaik its been primarily Chris, Ken and Bob doing development. The last two I believe were founders. Bob may have left but Chris and Ken are still there. They deliver in spurts and are working on new stuff. They consider themselves more like a boutique software company and like Spectrasonics they are a very small company who work on stuff for years before they are ever released. I know this from beta testing for them for years.

I do think they could do with some mk2s and enlarged gui's. But for that old time/ vintage sound AND super easy to use, many are still my first call effects.

Soundtoys plugs are along the lines of PSP, "If it aint broke, dont fix it".

Post

Maybe they're not broke, but the UI's definitely need an update. I bought them years and years ago, but would I buy them now with their tiny, outdated UIs? Not a chance. Plug design has come on leaps and bounds the last few years, but not at soundtoys. I have no idea what they've been doing over there for the last 4 years, maybe they've got something mega on the way!

Probably. They are on cruise control since years now.

VST3 coming for doze soon, good news :)

Was thinking of this thread as I used Decapitator and Filterfreak on the weekend. They are still as powerful now as they always were.
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive

I like Soundtoys plugins. Do not even know they are overrated!?

Post

I answer these kinds of questions by looking at my latest mixing project and reviewing the Soundtoys plugins I'm using.
And despite the fact that I have high quality modern plugins and I am always informed of what is new and have the best on the market, I still use Decapitator, Microshift, Echoboy & Jr, DevilLoc DLX, PanMan and Tremolator.

Overrated? I do not care. The important thing for me is to work.

Dark and gritty is exactly how I would describe them.
