todays irrelevant issue: naming your music files

So, I have most of my music ripped from CDs, downloads etc for convenience (guess most people do now) but as it's been an ongoing process (years...), I've noticed inconsistancies in my methods...
Most files are nicely tagged (woo me) but the actual filenames are all over the place, some named track # - title, some just the title, some even with everything (#, artist, album, title...)
I think everything I use now handles tags properly (not like some old players that ignored track tag so you had to have the track # in the name etc) so wondered about firing up the mighty mp3tag and renaming everything to just the track title. Will I regret this? May look tidy but...? Pitfalls I may be overlooking...
Of course, when I started I plumped for 320 bitrate MP3s, so have an itch to re-do everything to FLAC now storage is cheaper...
Cheers.

I did that a few years ago, need to update. Think I renamed everything trackno_tracktitle, corrected any album name issues and sorted 'track artist' variations to match 'album artist' because of different music player behaviours.GaryG wrote: Wed Mar 30, 2022 1:05 pm so wondered about firing up the mighty mp3tag and renaming everything to just the track title.
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

You can usually set the naming behavior in the MP3 ripping software you're using.
And, MP3's you buy at Amazon, for example, are always named like this: Folder Artist -> Folder Album name -> 01 - Track name.mp3.
If you have naming inconsistencies, probably best to do your naming scheme in the same way.
I've lots of inconsistencies as well though. But, I don't really mind that. Too much work to rename everything.

This is how I approach it too. Apple’s structure is the same as Amazon and I find it easier to keep everything this way.chk071 wrote: Wed Mar 30, 2022 1:17 pm You can usually set the naming behavior in the MP3 ripping software you're using.

I also add metadata with an app called Meta. I thinks it’s Mac only and wouldn’t be surprised if they’re being strong armed to find a new name soon.
I’ve replaced most of any mp3s with lossless, but still have a few oldies from my younger days that wouldn’t sound any better if they were lossless.

I have common naming convention for all of my tracks gathered since I started DJing 16 years ago, which are about 25K mp3s and counting.
Use old custom script that renames files, but anyway often fix the details myself. Author and track name info is obligatory, other details are not so important.

Thanks all.
I think I'll go with track# title as suggested even if only so they're in the right order if I look in file explorer. Never been much into 'library' programs, prefer to have my folders organised then use something light to play the tracks. More often than not these days I just use Resonic anyway.

It's pretty easy with something like MP3Tag, takes a while, just have to be careful the rules you choose apply to everything you've selected or else gets messy.
I wouldn't offend people with real OCD but... I get kind of OCD when filenames are messy, maybe working in IT and forever having to find stupidly/lazily named files for people.

I use track number - artist name - track name under the Artist / album folder.
This is because if you have VA album, then you know who is the author.
With MP3 tag I always set correct Album Author, Author, Album and Track names so players like resonic or aimp (on the phone) shows folders nicely.

That's exactly what I AM doing right now, replacing my selected collection from 320kbps MP3 to FLAC. Lots of clicks and patience required, as I only keep the tunes I really like, not the full albums. So it's just Artist - Track name for me.GaryG wrote: Wed Mar 30, 2022 1:05 pm Of course, when I started I plumped for 320 bitrate MP3s, so have an itch to re-do everything to FLAC now storage is cheaper...

It all has to be tagged right or my favorite player is a B to scroll through.
It taught me to be more organized, with other people's music at least

I use :
Artist / Album / # / TrackName
in the 'Album' tag, I always put the year of release first.
So when I Browse an artist discography I'm sure it's in the right chronological order

I know that one well. I have a lot of intermediary project files like that and . . .

I only rip my cd's to wav files and only when I want to change something and then I burn back to cdr and I generally mark what I have done like, for example
Ceremony [-1 semitone][-20db]
Echoes [Split][-20db]
Rage in Eden [4 secs slower][-20db]

How much music are we talking about here? I have more than 14,000 songs, just the thought of having to go through them all and name them properly would give me nightmares, because if I started I'd have to finish. But I never look at the files names, which means I don't have to care. I'm super-anal when it comes to metadata, such that it makes the file names irrelevant.
