Cockos are delighted to announce the first new track type to be added to Reaper since its inception, the Non-Functional Track. Every Non-Functional Track is a digitally unique project element, but also an innovative opportunity for bold Reaper users to express themselves and their dreams.
Visionary leader and Cockos’ Leader of Envisioning Vision, Justin Frankel, said: “Reaper users have always marvelled at its open attitude to what constitutes ‘a track’, but the elephant in the room has always been that, philosophically speaking, it was always potentially something, a place where Audio or Midi or Video or Text could at any time become present. We realised that was, in itself, an artificial limitation because it precluded the existence of true nothingness. That ends now. We can’t wait to see what users don’t do with this new breakthrough technology!”
Cockos’ Non-Functional Tracks will be exclusively available to Reaper users later this month. They may be minted by right-clicking in empty space, and then right-clicking the right-click menu that appears, and then clicking away without choosing anything.
The environmental impact of every new Non-Functional Track is not significant when compared to the energy use of the global audio production sector as a whole, but improvements are planned that, when adopted, will reduce its already relatively modest energy consumption.

you really notice though when you delete these non-functional tracks, they certainly invoke a nothingness that adds to the somethingness of your tracks.
