I use Cubase SX for my music but want to start to get a bit more mobile and use GPO and Silver on my laptop. Thing is, I need to keep as much CPU/RAM free as possible to squeeze the max performance out of it and was wondering if anyone knows of any decent sequencers, preferably with no audio or disable facilities for audio, that would be any good.

cheers

Why not try a demo of EnergyXT or Tracktion? These are smaller to install than Cubase, so will leave more RAM for other things.

Keep in mind though that it's not really the sequencer causing the load, but hungry plugins (i think).

I fare pretty well here with a four year old Mac running Logic, as long as i don't run crystal in Polymode :-0

that's partially true Bonteburg, but the more advanced hosts like pro tools, logic, sonar, and cubase definitely use far more resources than some of the lower end sequencers. bulky vsts just add to the processing drainage. I've found live is fairly resource friendly, except its lack of track freezing. if I were you I'd take c00kie's advice and check out energyXT. XT, live, and reason are my 3 main sequencers/hosts of choice (well, reason doesn't totally count, but I use it enough that I count it). but yes, energy is totally modular, so you can do just about anything with it, and it's small enough to fit on a floppy! it's quite different from other sequencers, so it'll take a little getting used to, but there's plenty of resources to get you started on the energyXT forums here. It's SUPER cheap, too, so there's really no need to even bother with the demo, just grab that thing and get to work :D

Energy eXT and Tracktion seem to be the most cpu efficient sequencers have tried so far. Tracktion at the current version is now free and eXT is a super value and looks to me to be on a fast track to comping Utopia

I agree, you should try EXT
Be aware of a certain learning curve with XT.
Tracktion is easier to learn but XT is more flexible.

The choice is up to you...

which sequencer use more cpu in the same circusntances, cubase or FL?

Jeskola Buzz might fit the bill: it was designed a fair few years ago so the CPU overheads aren't very taxing because of the computers it was designed to run on; it runs pretty much all the VST and DX instruments i've ever thrown at it; and it's excellent for doing live tweakery on.

The only major caveats are that some of the older instruments are foul and unstable but if you install Hamst3r's index it becomes far less cantankerous; it also doesn't have delay compensation due to its routing method and since the source code was lost it's too late to put it in.

I've found Tracktion and Reason to be the two best sequencers as far as low-cpu usage goes. Of course you can't do audio with Reason, so i find myself using Reason rewired into Traction and still get the benefits of low cpu usage and superior stability. I love FL Studio, but it can sure give the old cpu a workout. If you disable midi out, use smart disable on the plug-ins, and stick with as many native plugs as possible, FL performs much better. :)
