I wonder how expensive you can make it by up speccing. I think I managed to make a Mac Pro around $70,000+

Post

so it comes in at a fairly reasonable $12,918AUD - oh and that doesn't include a monitor

Post

My only pre-requisite is that this computer can handle multiple device-in channels without feedback.
Most producers just like Me would pay the money if it can do that/
Now that I have two working systems, I think then of interfaces and simplicity. Can I record and play, and finally can I hook up My computer to an entire band.

Also, with those multiple signals, can they also be routed to two softwares, or will we have the same issues as the lesser mac m1 computers?

If I could with that computer, it's cheap. If not, not worth it. If someone owns one, can they please share test results like this? It would mean a lot to many people I think.

Looks like my next system. I bought a new system about 2 years ago so it'll be another 2 years or so before I plonk down the cash for another one.

But yeah the Mac Studio looks like a fantastic machine. I'd want 32GB ram and at least 1TB disk. So I guess I'd get the ultra version. Thunderbolt drives come in a few good sizes though so my options are still plenty.

Another 2 or 3 years off. Hopefully by then things will be even beefier. But it's not for sure that considering all the shit that is going on in the world that we won't soon see used computers going for as much as new ones like we see with cars today. Gee wouldn't that be f**ked up?

In regards to m1 and the speed that comes with it, it would seem to Me that the slowest part of the product (probably with the max and ultra as well) is in the security and the provisioning and control of resources.

If such a chip was to have the security "turned off" par se, and the encryption which I understand is an option, it would make such a machine very powerful.

I'll perform My own tests, I guess I'll have to come up with a way of obtaining forensic test results regarding latency and responsiveness.

If one didn't need 8TB of internal SSD, the 64-core GPU or 128GB of RAM, then A$6,099 seems a bit more reasonable for equivalent audio processing performance.

I was just seeing how much I could pump it. And I need 8Tb for all of the snare samples that I will collect.

Good point. I currently have to spread my kick drum collection across multiple 2TB SSDs, so those upgrades may actually be worth it in the end.

Post

That's a lot of kick drums.
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

Post

My kick drum folder is 70 MB. It contains about 1500 samples and I believe it to have any kind of kick covered I could ever want.
Not to mentioned all the ones in Addictive Drums, and some more drum machine plugins I have

Any Mac since 2001 or so could do all of that, or I don't understand your question... (Its not a PC...)
Multiple device-in channels without feedback is the responsibility of your interface/software. If you get feedback its user error. To hook up a complete band is a matter of an interface with enough inputs...
I can route input to as many softwares as I want, it has always been like that...

Thunderbolt drivers are a theft if you are an Apple Silicon customer.

Benchmarks already show that M1 machines perform better with USB 3.2 drives than anything else.

Both Thunderbolt and USB are Intel's technologies, but have you seen much Thunderbolt outside Apple computers which were until recently engineered around Intel's chips?

As much as Apple marketing folks love the kick of that standard's trade name they'll need to let go, and so will their customers as without Intel they apparently won't be able to do it as well.

Fair point...

i have one and no it can't. i've made videos proving it. I don't want to seem provocative, but there's a difference between "wanting" the best and testing carefully to truly appreciate a system's limitations.

here's a video showing those limitations:

likely these limitations can be superceded by turning all security off. I haven't tested that theory yet.

windows with a sound card asio is faster. anything with thunderbolt or usb isn't as fast as a pcie connection mostly because that every connection is tied a serial in/out connection proxy firewall and security setting, rather also than routing that one connection to various outs in parralell; it's designed in a paranoid forcing re-iteration. I assume that would prevent any kind of malware from changing the sound itself, it does seem bizzare though, should that happen. of course when tpm's on processors are not serial and have a layer for every core any latency that encryption once imposed will be a thing of the past.

using encryption and forcing a serial route does away with any added speed that a multi-core processor can achieve. it's a simple thing.

maybe though i was thinking that the newer mac m2 or whatever have considered this advance. it doesn't seem rocket science. i notice that cole guy on youtube just compared pro and studio, maybe that will be useful.

here's a video showing those limitations:
Much talking, little showing… It confirms my suspicion of user error. If you get feedback there is a reason. Its impossible that the computer or OS is causing it, unless you create it with some setting… Millions of productions are made with Windows, Mac and Linux. If there would be such a problem nobody would use them…
