[mixing] In which situation you EQ-boosted the 300hz-400hz area?

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

Please, specify the genre in your answer i.e. Rock mix/Electronic mix, for context.

I say "boost" because is very common to hear people cutting or leaving untouched that area for fearing the "muddy". I am one of those - but I think like there is a whole word that I am missing.

Thank you in advance

If your snare is a bit wimpish, boosting around this frequency can add a bit of muscle. Ditto bass instruments.

I suspect, but it's just a speculation, that many folks boost it on main vocals. :?:

Anywhere from 200-400 can be buildupy for me.. I doubt I've ever done it on an entire mix, but I'm sure I've bumped that up for guitar or vocals in the past.

There's exceptions to every rule.

But first thing that comes to mind is that I'd do this pretty much exclusively to single instruments, never groups. Once a bunch of sounds are summed there's not much to be gained by boosting there, usually. If the whole bus is lacking in that range of course I'd try it though, no reason why not. Though maybe the problem is better solved by EQing the individual sources.

Indeed, a lead vocal often needs help in that range. Snares or kicks too if they aren't punchy enough. In the former case I'd boost after compression, in the latter I'd do it before.
