No, it has to be an Apollo or a Satellite.j wazza wrote: Wed Apr 06, 2022 10:08 pm to buy their plugins can you have any uad hardware? eg could you get the cheapest one, i think the volt, and buy plugins to run natively?
UAD Spark Subscription model opinions?

I mean, the M1 MAX will already throw off excess CPU with hundreds of tracks using realtime VIs and effects. That would have been totally inconceivable for a laptop in the very recent past.elxsound wrote: Wed Apr 06, 2022 9:53 pm History is not on your side (or our side). Generally the excess CPU is short lived. As one developer mentioned before (and I’m paraphrasing), as the capability of processing increases, the demand and incentive to “optimize” isn’t there.
Anyway, we’ll all see how it plays out 10 years from now if we’re all lucky enough still to be around.

May we all live long enough to bath in excess CPU like pigs in slop.elxsound wrote: Wed Apr 06, 2022 9:53 pm History is not on your side (or our side). Generally the excess CPU is short lived. That's the equivalent of saying to a Windows user: "You CAN own Logic, you just have to buy a Mac"Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Wed Apr 06, 2022 9:39 pmBut you can own them perpetually. I've got perpetual licenses for the 1176 and LA-2A collections as well as the Studer. You just currently need some UAD DSP hardware registered to your UA account. Now I've got two licenses in my iLok account for the native versions of them. I can even buy perpetual licenses for the Minimoog and B3 if I were so inclined. Good stuff.Plaster wrote: Wed Apr 06, 2022 7:40 pm Subscription is terrible. I wish companies would stop forcing them down our throats. That said, i wouldve loved to use these native UAD plugins if they could be owned perpetually. Hopefully in the future UAD will see the light! Even WUP is better than subscription only imo.

Eh? Where did this come from? I haven’t heard this mentioned anywhere. According to the FAQ - https://help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articl ... oduct-FAQs - it’s a pretty simple rule - if you own the powered plugin, you will get the UADx version. And if you get any hardware at all, you can buy the powered plugin version.

Exactly, in order to own a DSP plugin you need DSP. Volt doesn't have it. It is only an audio interface.noiseboyuk wrote: Thu Apr 07, 2022 7:01 amEh? Where did this come from? Ah, Gotya. They also make other hardware products that use UAD-2 though, not just satellites and apollos, so it looked kinda misleading.filulilu wrote: Thu Apr 07, 2022 7:12 amExactly, in order to own a DSP plugin you need DSP. I am not aware of any hardware with DSP other than Apollos and Satellites. What do you have in mind?noiseboyuk wrote: Thu Apr 07, 2022 7:15 am Ah, Gotya. They also make other hardware products that use UAD-2 though, not just satellites and apollos, so it looked kinda misleading.

Apparently there is a loophole, which is to buy something like an Apollo, buy UAD2 plugins that have a UADX counterpart which puts the iLok licenses in your iLok account, and then return the Apollo.
This whole business of attaching iLok licenses to non-iLok hardware seems pretty convoluted to me. Not aware of any other company doing this, not sure how smart of an idea it will turn out to be.

Ok, I guess that's better than nothing. I thought that only people who owned those plugins before Spark released could perpetually own them because they were grandfathered in. But if everyone can own them than it is like buying a very expensive, obsolete dongleFunkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Wed Apr 06, 2022 9:39 pm But you can own them perpetually. I happened to already have a UAD card in my PC, so suddenly having access to these plugins on a Mac and natively [at no additional cost] was a really nice bonus. I'm stoked for these hitting the PC in the fall [not to mention M1 on the Mac] to get access to them there. Also looking forward to them growing this out with additional plugins (Distressor, Pultec, FATSO, Fairchilds, Pultecs, Neve Comps, etc.).
I think it's clear the short-term strategy is for UA to use these native UADx plugins as a carrot to add value to their DSP hardware and try to boost sales of those. They'll probably stick with that for a few years before retiring the hardware requirement. Just my guess.

That would only work until the store resells the returned UAD DSP hardware to someone else. When the new buyer can't register it, than the buyer or store will contact UAD. I am sure UAD will be able to track where it is registered to and pull the iLok licenses associated with it. naughty, naughtytrackbout wrote: Thu Apr 07, 2022 12:59 pm Apparently there is a loophole, which is to buy something like an Apollo, buy UAD2 plugins that have a UADX counterpart which puts the iLok licenses in your iLok account, and then return the Apollo. This whole business of attaching iLok licenses to non-iLok hardware seems pretty convoluted to me. Actually not my idea! It was posited by some mad lad in the GS thread and confirmed by a UAD rep as a working, although not recommended strategy https://gearspace.com/board/showpost.ph ... count=1232

It may work now, but being aware that's a gap right now, I'm sure UA will figure out a way to revoke said licenses. It's also such an absurd length to go for an 1176 plugin, that I'd think someone was a lunatic if they tried it. I mean, they're not THAT good. Just get TrackComp 2.
