Occasionally, I post links here at KVR regarding the latest work/videos by Yoyoka Soma, child prodigy drummer from Hokkaido whose achievements are eye-watering.
(And as a drummer / concert percussionist of 33 years myself, I can confidently say that Yoyoka is more technically gifted than the VAST majority of drummers out there, despite her only recently turning 12 years old).
A few months back, she impressed legendary sticksman Ian Paice, of Deep Purple fame, with her covers of some of his tricky Deep Purple drum compositions.
And in the past couple of days, he has released a video on his YT channel praising Yoyoka's very impressive drumming jam, called "Sparkling".
Ian is not prone to hype: he's been professionally drumming / drum coaching at the highest level for more than 50 years and he's seen MANY capable drummers.
But he's completely impressed by this 12 year old Japanese girl, who some commenters even joke is the re-incarnation of John Bonham and Keith Moon combined!
Curiously, I don't personally like the style of this piece "Sparkling", as it's not to my taste.
But, in fairness, it is a great display (and a professional video production) of drumming, switched up throughout the piece into different patterns, by a young Japanese drummer bound to go far in the future.
How far she goes remains to be seen:
