it's far from putting a mic next to a drum...
It's putting a mic next to a drum so the drummer doesn't hit it.

Somebody should make a drumstick with a built in microphone. You can't get closer to the source than that!

Hmm, do you want to turn your thread into a list of all possible brands?
Should it be more of a kind of marketing thread for some companies?

I don't think that would help you much - unless you don't really want to
produce music, but just accumulate a lot of different devices that you
probably won't even understand.

Almost everything you can find on the market, even often feeware, is
pretty good. But you have to decide for yourself what is good for you -
and what YOU want to work with.
