Too concise. Sorry.
"Given a sound file of some instruments playing, to what extent is it possible to recognize the pitches and the rhythm, and convert it to Midi or some notation? For monophonic sound this should be possible, but for polyphonic it's probably very hard. Is there software that does anything in this direction? I'd appreciate pointers to research in this area."
Victor.

http://www.lateralsol.com/ had a pretty cool software MIDI guitar device. Simply plug in the guitar, put this software on, and it would trigger synths on MIDI channels. And, I think it recorded .MID files as well? It's 'demo' state is good for mono notes and some chords. But apparently when you buy it, it really improves detection.
Like MDM says, not the 'best' - but certainly NOT BAD!
