How can you extend a Drum Sample's Decay Without changing the tone of the sound?

How to make that sound...

Hello,

i was wondering if there are any ways of extending the length of a drum sample, and it still sounds natural.

The only ways i can think of doing it, is by time stretching or adding reverb but from my experience those change the tone of the sample.

whereas i would like it to sound the same but with a longer decay.

Many Thanks

i do this indeed with timestreching in geist2.
in small amounts (30%) it sound nice.
another option, but standalone, would be ircam lab ts.

it does affect the timbre/ attack.

Melodyne - pretty much artifact-free stretching

Thanks for sharing these two plugins,

I've not heard of them before.

Unfortunately they are too expensive for me.

Maybe i can pick them up in the future

Just tried Melodyne on some samples and it works really well.

I never thought of using melodyne in that way.

I appreciate your help!

impossible but you can use reverb and mess around with mixing it in with the dry sound and keep the dry at full volume, maybe duck the reverb, or try psp pianoverb, resynthesis, physical modeling like objeq delay or tritik moodal to extend the decay in a way that either is subtle or just sounds good

maybe with transient preserving time stretching you could keep the attack the same

If it's a tom drum, you can always use a resonant HPF to replace the fundamental. The Drop is perfect for this trick.

If it's a snare then you could do a similar thing but also gating some white noise - or generating the noise with a synth and directly editing the envelope with the ADSR. You could further capture the frequency spectrum of your snare (EQ match) and use that profile to filter the white noise before mixing in with the original signal.

Thank you

some cool ideas that i will try out.

I appreciate it!

My pleasure! It has powers beyond vocal and instrument tuning.. immense power.
And its 'dumb' tuning-ignorant mode is perfect for drums.

One day they'll turn it into the world's most incredible sample playback machine, and we'll all be happy. Finally.

another candidate for that application is serato sample. very good time and pitch shifting.
