The “Upgrade Your Operating System” trolls are missing the point. Windows XP sounds so much warmer.

It would be a nicer place without the weirdos. Seriously, I can't think of any sane reason to still be running XP in 2022. I thought maybe PCMCIA but surely there is nothing that runs on PCMCIA that can't easily be replaced in a cost-effective manner today? I think I've still got my Indigo I/O somewhere but I'm not daft enough to keep a 15 year old laptop around just so I can use it.
I would suggest that's for very good reason. Honestly, if someone kept complaining that their 20 year old car was always breaking down, wouldn't the obvious advice be to buy a newer car or just put up with it and stop whining? It's no different here.CrystalWizard wrote: Mon Apr 11, 2022 8:56 pmi would agree with the OP, as soon as you say XP thread devolves.
Believe it or not, it's still there in Windows 11, virtually unchanged from 2001. I still use it to rip CDs.cel4145 wrote: Tue Apr 12, 2022 12:00 amThe vintage version of Windows Media Player on XP is awesome.

That's not true, lots of new plugins still come with a 32 bit version and 32 bit plugins will still run on Windows 11 64 bit, if you have a 32 bit host or a host capable of running both 32 and 64 bit plugins, like Bitwig.jamcat wrote: Wed Apr 13, 2022 2:40 amThat's a limited pool that hasn't grown any in over a decade. i only run "obsolete" OS'es with no problems because i simply don't care about them, not because i think they are somehow superior.
XP is missing some nice features like the Windows snapping per key commands, but otherwise it's still fine, especially if it's running on an equally old computer.
yes, you could put Linux on those, but it's sadly not there yet for me in regards of actual software support, so why not just leave an OS on them that just work.
had no problem with Win 7 that came with my laptop in 2010 until i got my new laptop from that fruit company in December, and even there i will have no problems staying on Monterey if that means that it'll run my software flawlessly.
but if i'm running old software (especially if it's now two decades old, like XP is), i'm not expecting it to still run every new piece of app or plug-in

Another option to consider. If the hardware was popular, chances are it will still work with Linux.Greenstorm33 wrote: Mon Apr 11, 2022 7:23 pm I mean if the question is "how do I get x modern piece of software to work on my OS that's been deprecated for 14 years?" then "upgrade your OS" is really the only reasonable response.

Amiga! Very cool! Believe it or not, they are still alive and released an OS upgrade not too long ago.jamcat wrote: Mon Apr 11, 2022 8:26 pm I keep sending angry letters in the post to developers demanding they support my Amiga 3000 but so far the bastards haven't written me back.

Maybe to run a bunch of old 32bit plugins without transferring them all.BONES wrote: Wed Apr 13, 2022 7:48 am It would be a nicer place without the weirdos. Seriously, I can't think of any sane reason to still be running XP in 2022. ...
Perhaps one has a whole lotta half finished projects and bits and pieces that might not be worth the time to transfer and then screw around with bit bridging. It's easier for me just to leave all that stuff on an old but functional machine that i have no other use for. Pull up an old 32bit piece and play around with it. Then if i decide i like it enough flatten all the tracks and move it to a newer machine. If i decide i don't like then i do nothing.

There's lotsa weird stuff that is either hard to find or basically non existent (quite a bit is). No, i'm not gonna go trawl my old machine to see what those are. Happily some are getting updated (smartelectronics, VoS,...)jamcat wrote: Wed Apr 13, 2022 2:40 amThat's a limited pool that hasn't grown any in over a decade. Maybe i'd wanna just keep using the tools i have, not buy the "new, improved" version and have to learn it and place it in my workflow?
Yeah but i don't have the need to run new 32bit plugs. Im not looking to expend my 32bit system, just keep it chugging along and basically scavenging bits and pieces from it 'til it finally explodes in a puff of smokejamcat wrote: Wed Apr 13, 2022 2:40 am That's not true, lots of new plugins still come with a 32 bit version and 32 bit plugins will still run on Windows 11 64 bit, if you have a 32 bit host or a host capable of running both 32 and 64 bit plugins, like Bitwig.

I'm talking about people who aren't having issues, people that want to discuss Other aspects of using older OSs.
You are implying that all posts will be a version of "how do i get it to work", to them i say upgrade your OS. But there are people who might want to discuss completely unrelated topics.

I upgraded mine to windows 7, but I’m not sure why. I only ever used it on XP. I booted it up and it still works. Mine is from 2006 too. Its a lovely old HP Pavilion in mint condition. I keep it around for messing with my old 32bit VSTs & software and watching DVDs outside of the studio. Its also good as a monitor and editor for my Nord Micromodular. I have the last version of Live 8 installed for older projects, and an old version of Sound Forge. It works fine (bit slow) so why would I throw it out?elxsound wrote: Wed Apr 13, 2022 11:47 pmI upgraded mine to windows 7, but I’m not sure why. I only ever used it on XP. It is too much to ask, frankly. This is the internet, and anyone with an opinion that differs from yours is just DYING to tell you how wrong you are.Geometrid wrote: Mon Apr 11, 2022 7:10 pmSo it would be good to be able to ask questions of fellow XP users without a pile on from the Upgrade Police. Too much to ask?
The way I deal with this? (When I ask a specific question and people reply with questions/answers that have nothing to do with the problem I'm trying to solve?) I don't respond to those folks. I let them pat themselves on the backs for defending their imaginary positions, and I focus only on the replies that are relevant to my question.
It took me decades to get to that point! And sometimes it's tough to fight that urge to reply with snark- but doing so rarely achieves anything positive. I wish you the best!
EDIT: I also mute/block individuals I find particularly unhelpful. (I prefer "mute" options when available, because those don't notify the user that you've muted them. Some folks get a twisted satisfaction out of learning they've been blocked, so I deny them that whenever possible.) And for what it's worth I don't think I have anyone on KVR blocked- this is just a general social media practice of mine. It's an ongoing effort to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of my social media feeds.
