Its another example of copying 'limitations' on old hardware, warts and all....we can do better in 2021!
I can see the value if you are using it with unison, e.g. I've created patches in Obsession that play different voices at different octaves, but not to trigger them sequentially.

If you are running sequences/arps or any kind of played rhythmic patterns it can sound very cool to have different sounding voices/tones. I've seen this done on with the 4 Voice and have done it myself with a MonoPoly and enjoyed the sound. One of my favorite bands, Broadcast, would actually do that with the old VST QuadraSID (which they told me they preferred to the SIDStation that they owned). Round robins sequences would mix up the tones and give a very cool feel to the synth patterns being played. Sometimes they might have three similar tones and one different or all slightly different. While Broadcast's sequences weren't particularly complex and could have been replicated by having different VST instances spread across tracks, it was the exact feature of having round robins triggering different sounding synths voices that inspired the parts. It's not for everyone, but it's potentially useful and a worthy feature.

Thank god I didn't pay for this crap. The DEFAULT patch, a simple saw or whatever, takes 10% of my computing power. Nearly EVERY other sound preset? 35-75%. I literally can't use the damn thing. And my computer has no problems with other synths like ANA2, which is by far the most CPU-hungry one I own.

I like PA, a lot. But they need to completely recode this garbage. Again, it was free for me via the Focusrite bonus stuff, but I'm very disappointed that this relatively simple plugin taxes CPUs like this.

computer spec or gtfo :D

bx_oberhausen is one of the currently best sounding and unique synths in my eyes. You can soooo drive it to the edges. sounds even better than Diva... (nothing against Diva though, my most-used synth, it's far more versatile, but sound wise a bit weaker than oberhausen)
so I think higher CPU is ok (at least here) because it plainly sounds better.
Did you compare to Softube's new synths, eg. Model 72 or Model 84 CPU wise? They're IMO on a similar level in sound quality/fatness. Or maybe OB-XA from Arturia?

You got something for free, yet you still feel the need to have a whinge about it? Normally I'd give you a few tips on how to reduce its CPU load but ungrateful people don't deserve it so you can go without.

Meanwhile, even the most CPU intensive patches I use rarely go over 20% on my laptop. It's not as hungry as Korg's ARP Odyssey, either, but it is so freakin' good that I'd have upgraded my computer to run if I'd needed to, just as we moved to 64 bit so I could run Korg's Odyssey. You have to get your priorities right.

Plugin Guru's Unify can do things similar to that using PolyBox.

Where are the presets? The preset browser is blank. Windows, VST3 version, Ableton Live 11. Just checked again: the presets directory is indeed empty after installation.

Post

Have you tried the plugin's internal browser?

Yes, I tried the internal browser as well. I installed the plugin while my DAW was running, maybe this messed up the installation? Will try again later.

this little cheat is usefull! voice allocation to replicate voice cards.

No idea. Try to uninstall and reinstall it.

Yeah it sounds good, IMHO not as good as Diva, but different good. Then again I have i7-4960X CPU and some 32 voice patches give me 180% CPU usage

Oh well, waiting to get the new machine anyway.

It takes a lot of CPU, but, it sounds very good as well.

And, the filter is one of the creamiest you will find in soft synth land. ;)

What I dislike a bit is the unpredictable behavior or the envelopes. There's always some kind of "squelching" going on, because, the attack phase of the envelopes is always open a bit, and differs from note to note. I know, this might be pretty much the expected behavior of analog hardware, but, it's really extreme in oberhausen.

Judging by sound demos, I think the original SEM has that as well.

Hey all, got this plugin in a free giveaway. Turns out both the VST3 and VST2 just don't respond to my midi keyboard in Reaper while any other virtual instrument works just fine. Literally, this is the first plugin that doesn't work out of the box for me. The virtual keyboard and midi notes work just fine with it, but anything coming from my keyboard is just non-responsive in any way. Reaper detects notes coming in on the track just fine, but the plugin does not see anything. Anyone else with this problem and maybe got a fix?
