FabFilter Pro-MB for de-essing?

Very well, when you get easy esses to isolate.
However, Pro-DS has a very different detection algorithm. It's more capable at de-essing difficult sources where each 'ess' sound is all over the place and with different amplitude. Pro-DS also takes care of 'tsss' 'tchk' and other similar sounds, whereas these can be hard to nail with Pro-MB.
Finally, the main difference is in speed of operation. Pro-DS you just tweak a few knobs and settings and are done.. usually just tweaking the main big knob taking a few seconds. Pro-MB is a lot more fiddly to setup for good results, but it IS possible to get extremely good results with Pro-MB.

Thank you for the comprehensive response, bmanic, a quality post as usual.
I predominantly enjoy "de-essing" for reducing harshness in the high mids i.e. 2kHz - 5kHz, not necessarily vocal stuff.
I'm looking at Pro-MB in case Pro-Q is not able to handle the job. Pro-Q doesn't have dedicated AR settings and the automatic attack of the dynamic section appears to be around 10 ms instead of 5 or 3 ms like in a proper de-esser, correct me if I'm wrong here.
I'll probably grab Pro-MB, as it seems more versatile than Pro-DS. I'll most likely get Pro-DS when it's on a sale anyways, just not yet, as I already have TB Sibilance 4 and it does the regular de-essing really well even if it doesn't go as low as 2 kHz, hope the frequency range gets extended BTW.
