Korg releases a new version of Volca FM - 6 voice poly, MIDI in/out etc

New volca fm dropped today.
Seems some sensible additions, not least 6 voice polyphony, onboard reverb added plus the ability to have both MIDI in and out without needing to mod the unit. Now reacts properly to external velocity, has a decent arp and 16 note polyphonic sequencer, obviously more useful now it comes with midi out.
Has a fun FM randomiser too. Oh and velocity sensitivity also now works for recording sequences too.

Seems the announcements dropped before most resellers have stock so haven’t yet seen availability or price.

All I said is that instead of making a shitty product less shitty, they could take an already good one and get rid of the unnecessary keys, which would bring the price down and make the form factor of the OP6 close(er) to Volca. Makes sense?

Just an outsider here, but maybe your horse is on the wrong track? This is clearly a Volca FM thread, not an Opsix thread. Basically makes the whole coffee/bread thing relevant.

Anyway, back on topic, the additions are decent. Definitely feels like a MkII kind of release. The originals still can be useful as dedicated bass synths.

Shouldn't be excited about velocity, but the fact it wasn't available and is now... is you know, lacklusterly some form of exciting.

I probably won't buy one of these as mine Volca FM is pretty solid on the shelf right now. Still trying to get my hands on a Cycles, maybe followed by Digitone so an FM2 would just be excessive.

I am two-minded about this - on one hand I think it's great that the polyphony has not reached an actually useable number, yet on the other hand it's still - almost 40years after it came out - not even 40% of that of the original. Which kinda makes it obvious that they dramatically cripple the polyphony strictly for reasons of pricing policy - which I find very sad and not something I have a strong motivation to support with my shekels.

Then again, I have - and love - the Reface DX, which only has 8 voices of polyphony as well.

I don't know enough about what's possible with their architecture. I'm personally happy just using an iPad IOS app named KQ Dixie.

I now have an Akemie's Taiko in my modular rack that's FM and I think that's probably enough for me for now, I don't use the Digitone anywhere enough to justify its cost so when I get my shit together it's going on Reverb or eBay.

Korg lavishes attention on their low-end gear and ignores its better products - like my Prologue 16!
