And don‘t forget there are free commercial synths, even free as in speech like Vital, or formerly commercial synths like Surge. I don‘t see at all a lack of quality. The only area which is sort of captured by commercial synths are monsters like Falcon or Halion… Some areas have clearly better commercial options, but the majority of commercial subtractive synths can easily be replaced by free ones…
If you insist on the last 0.01 % of authenticity of analog emulations you might be right as well, but with these you fail against the originals anyway…

Maybe, but I have very few high quality instruments I use, none of which can be replaced by freeware.

Pray tell? I AM genuinely interested as this argument does pop up frequently. Be nice to see a list of "you can't replace these with free instruments".

No arguing from me, I was genuinely curious. I know a presets designer who has done a lot with Zebra2. He even bought me a copy so I could do some testing for him. Must admit it is very "deep" and flexible. And I still use Alchemy myself, despite it being the old PC version. Not tried the others.

I had to google for Albino 3. Surge was one of the commercial competitions at is time (2006) I guess… Albino is abandoned, Surge is still actively supported and now open source. Actually supported only because Clas set it free as open source, else it would have seen the same destiny as Albino…
I would agree that Alchemy and Zebra are not easily replaceable with free instruments, the other three are, but as this is a matter of taste I can see your point to stick to those…

Surge is probably the best, it is better than most paid VST synths IMO. Full bucket VSTS are great.
