[thread title edited to spare us from further unnecessary arguments :D]

I watched 'De-Lovely' tonight and there was Robbie Williams murdering a Cole Porter song [don't remember which - an obvious example of selective memory]. He is so f**king irritating - the man can't sing, it's obvious. Oh yes, he can hit the notes most of the time but I bet that Data from Star Trek can sound more emotional than him. Watch the film and feel the terror if you don't believe me, it's awful [not the film, which is cool, the RW performance].

And then I got out of the cinema and played The Blue Nile's 'Hats' on my Walkman. Redemption :D :D

He can sing for sure

oh I could rant about Robbie indefinitely. Yes his singing is crap. Sure he can hold a tune, but he's like a pubsinger, parodying people who really can sing. To me it just sounds fake and his desperate attempts to be perceived as a "serious artist" are laughable. Even he finds it difficult maintaining the pretense. One minute he's all sincere and serious and the next minute he's Bez gurning and showing off like a complete berk..... I was appalled that he was nominated in Ch4's "music hall of fame" alongside those other respectable artists.... I would pay money to never hear "millenium" or "angels" ever again

Hmm, perhaps you should read my post more carefully. ie. the sentence after the one you quoted.

I like my seriously bad taste in music, it ranges from the philharmonic to U2, the one thing I can’t stand is stage music in the form of most Webber stuff.

His hits are awful or annoying at least, that's for sure. I agree about the pubsinger style up to a point.

Then there's "swing when you're winning", which is actually a thoroughly good album. He manages to pull a very nice and even emotional vocal performance and on the whole sounds very entertaining. Ok, he's no Sinatra, but listen to the duet for example. He is good on his own merits on this. :singer:

heh.i didnt listen with much attention until recently and was surprised to discover the same.. your data from star trek comparison is apt... or some german soldier singing schlagers

ugh, no! I think that stuff is the most contrived and phoney of all his music.... That exagerrated vibrato in his voice just makes me squirm

.....I could go on about it forever but I won't bore you!

What you are doing is slagging off a singer, songwriter, chorographer, mixer, instrumentalist, entertainer – of high standards – who is at some level still saying f*ck you to all the people that turned him down in the past. And if it was I, I doubt I would behave a lot different, and it fact rub the salt right in deep – which he does well - I think later you will hear a different incarnation, once this is fully out of his system. Make no mistake this is a talent.

I think he's one of a number of singers today who excels in self-promotion and utilising other peoples ideas and talents in order to sell music. I'd stick Madonna in the same category; they're very clever people but I don't give a toss about their music.

...and I'm also sick of seeing his gurning monkey-face on every TV show at the moment.

well yes, I probably would too and I would defend his right to do that. But I don't think he's the talented "artist" he pretends to be. He's just a chancer that is able to fool enough undiscriminating people to have a successful career - and good luck to him.

If you read some frank sinatra biography you would realise that he was exactly like this as well. He almost had a severe disrespect for songwriters, arrangers and musicians apparently. He didn't realise it wasn't his voice alone that did the music.

Either that or he was just being a bitch diva maximum.
