I don't think its a matter of a transgender woman being a real woman or not. But I think the experience of a female born a woman is different than a female born a man. There's different societal expectations put on a female born a woman that they tend not to be pushed into male dominated industries. So, I can understand his curiosity.diaseis wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 11:29 amWell just saw this but I still maintain what I say : even if it is a joke, are you implying that transgender women aren't women ? (it's a real question). Still computer science and nerdy stuff are often majoritarly a "male" thing, so I can understand why you're asking.1980-F wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 8:02 am I didn't want to offend anyone with the Wendy Carlos thing. I only thought of the double meaning of the question "was any participant female" in the sense of "but it isn't it anymore" as a kind of joke. Probably a little bit out of place. Sorry.
At least in pop music there are many female singers and songwriters, but generally making music (playing in a band or doing stuff like we do in the OSC) seems to be a "male thing". So I want to know if any woman are part of the OSC community.

As I said: My whole comment might have been misplaced. I'm not pejudiced against transgender people. The "joke" just came to my mind, because of my wording (is/was female) and especially because Wendy Carlos was a famous transgender person in the history of synthesizer music.diaseis wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 11:29 amWell just saw this but I still maintain what I say : even if it is a joke, are you implying that transgender women aren't women ? I was simply curious, if there are any non-male participants, because most of the music-making people I know personally are male. And I'm pleased to learn that there are a few among the OSC participants.

a little bit, yeah. as far as punchlines go, "transgender lol" is way overused and wasn't even that funny in the first place. but fair enough, i get that you meant no harm. you're probably not aware that using a name that someone left behind decades ago looks rather hostile (and is often intentionally so, hence the apprehensive reaction here).1980-F wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 8:02 am I didn't want to offend anyone with the Wendy Carlos thing. True and I'm very interested in all this kind of things. Social background and education do play a lot in all this, did a lot of digging on that for my memoir. But i think people underestimate how much transgender people are actually pushed out from male dominated middlegrounds because of that kind of comments. Some men have such a huge fear of losing they balls they just don't want trans' people around to remind them it's possible, and tbf I feel a bit sad when I come to a forum I like and I feel invalidated as a kind of ex-man who obviously couldn't have gotten here if they had a standard "girl" education. (not saying any of you did say that but that's just how I feel rn).Aro wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 12:14 pm I don't think its a matter of a transgender woman being a real woman or not. I mean I feel excluded from almost everywhere, I spend all my (non working) days alone in my appartment, making music and programming stuff (I'm nerdy as f**k), all I would like is some place where I'm not constantly reminded my difference, where I would not feel the need to justify myself.

i can relate, you are not alone. finding your people isn't easy but they are out there.diaseis wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 1:33 pm I mean I feel excluded from almost everywhere, I spend all my (non working) days alone in my appartment, making music and programming stuff (I'm nerdy as f**k), all I would like is some place where I'm not constantly reminded my difference, where I would not feel the need to justify myself.

I'm sorry if I implied that. I've never really thought about the struggles of a transgendered woman, but I'm sure there have been plenty of barriers that you've overcome in order to make it in a male dominated industry. I'm just coming from a more traditional background and dealing with my own struggles.diaseis wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 1:33 pm

For example, a couple of months a go I told my dad that I wanted to learn about home repair, hoping he could teach me a few things. He actually got angry and said that was my husbands job. I haven't picked up a plumbing book since.

Though for reasons unrelated to gender, I can relate to that as well. And even if not able to do more than simply not to exlude you, or others, please allow me to wish you well for the future.diaseis wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 1:33 pm I mean I feel excluded from almost everywhere, I spend all my (non working) days alone in my appartment, making music and programming stuff (I'm nerdy as f**k), all I would like is some place where I'm not constantly reminded my difference, where I would not feel the need to justify myself.

Uh, what happened here?
Everyone in the mood to share their intensely introvert lifestyles?! Another reason for why I've felt right at home here right away!
Besides the truly practical beauty of the OSC, which is honestly undeniable, considering all the things I've learned from and together with our core-gang. We have become a solid, musical family to me, that's for sure. Plenty of variety in character and origin, but all with immense love and passion to make music with synths and more, properly nerdy, too, and a galaxy of styles. Pepper and salt when it comes to the occasional miniature strive, but always ready to move forward from one little adventure to the next. My life would have a pretty gaping hole without the OSC and that gives me zero regrets!

I hope you are able to just relax here and trust that you are among fellow nerdy music often-programmery types who fully welcome you with no need to think about or explain or anything else whatsoever unless you yourself wish to do so for your own reasons. I have found the people here to be very accepting / chill / kind since 2015 when I first posted.diaseis wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 1:33 pm I mean I feel excluded from almost everywhere, I spend all my (non working) days alone in my appartment, making music and programming stuff (I'm nerdy as f**k), all I would like is some place where I'm not constantly reminded my difference, where I would not feel the need to justify myself.

I was born in 1976, and I'm male and British. Great to see a variety of ages, genders and nationalities here.
I grew up listening to Depeche Mode, Erasure and Jarre in the 80s. Then I started creating my own electronic music using Octamed on my Amiga in 1990 - and went from there. I also got into prog rock/metal, and I enjoy making big rock opera type things. But I have found it exciting making a purely electronic song from one synth. It's nice that everyone in the contest has the same free synth. Level playing field. Doesn't matter how rich or poor you are. It's just your creative skills.

Funny what difference 4 years make and what similarities remain, hehe. '72 here, Germany. Didn't really actively listen to anything in the 80's, but rather breakdancing, hehe, and making music, of course. OctaMed came around a while after I had started making tracks on C=64 and later Amiga. Used to love it, though!silverpants wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 6:40 pm I was born in 1976, and I'm male and British. Great to see a variety of ages, genders and nationalities here.

I grew up, trying to make the most out of the least, so to say, with a total passion to see what the machine can provide and how far it can be taken. That's why I love synths and the OSC is perfect, keeping that challenge alive.
