Are we talking about the same thing? I'm talking about playing a VSTi, over your MIDI keyboard, for example, and recording the audio output of that VSTi.

Mmm, weird, i don't see it in the compare list either. It was in the Artist version up to C11 for sure. There was a bug, many topics on SB forums about it, but that was fixed.
Can you use external hardware in C12 Artist ? Because that would need Real Time Export...

In your example you could ofcourse just record your midi notes and then 'Render In Place' or Export. Or use 'Retrospective record' (is that in Artist? Dunno) and bounce/render/export after.

But yeah, Real Time Export can be used creatively. I used it a lot for recording of live tweaking of both hardware and software or a combo of both. Then Cut out the useful parts later.

Pretty sure retrospective record is in Artist too, though I've never used that either. As you say, you can record your midi playing then go back and export. I still don't quite understand why recording live output from a VSTi is important - for sure it's one more step exporting the midi/VSTi recording but...not exactly difficult or particularly time consuming. Artist does all of that, the same as Pro.

Hey, don't want to claim something wrong. Maybe I was just too stupid to record VSTi's output back when I owned Artist. Or, I thought it works the usual way I do it in other DAW's, but it works differently in Cubase.

As for why it's important: Well... you never played instruments live, and just want to record what you're noodling? Of course, you can record the MIDI, and then export it. As you say, it's one more step.

Also quite handy to be able to record audio when you're doing a video.

Quick addendum - I'm referring to Artist 10.5. Apparently in 11 real time export was missed off from the dialogue box when recording. A very quick search on Steinberg forum revealed that was said to be an error by Steinberg and they put it back in on the next update version. Sounds like it was there but no link to the function itself - should now be fixed. I dunno for sure as I'm in no hurry to buy Artist 12 at all.

No. Well, yes I have but I simply record it then export. Just the way I've always done that even when I was using Pro. Probably I'm too lazy to learn another way I guess. And also too bad a player for it to be useful - I know I'll always want to go in and edit the playing, so it doesn't generally make sense for me to go straight to the error-revealing method that is recording everything you play.

I can't play either, but, I had one or two occasions where I found it useful. Also to reproduce bugs in instruments, and record it, when I reported those bugs.

For some reason I thought that Cubase defaulted to VST 3 when given a choice between a VST 2 and VST 3 FX plugin but having just installed Kickstart 2 and having no sidechain option I have discovered otherwise. I can see my new Baby Audio Crystalline has done the same so I'm going to have to deal with that as well.
I know I can hide the VST 2 plugins but is there an option to default to VST 3? (the Cubase manual did not giveth one hope).

Are you sure that the Kickstart VST3 hasn't been blacklisted?

First time I hear that a DAW defaults to VST2, when there is a VST2 and a VST3.
