As far as i know the NOW switch adds some brightness. It doesn't it make the reverb cleaner.

Well, then you are mistaken:

1970s: downsampled (10khz bandwidth), dark, noisier modulation

1980s: no downsamplling, dark, noisier modulation

NOW: no downsamplling, bright, clean modulation

That is written right there on the f**king GUI, for crying out loud.

Each algo has its own description too, so it's not hard to find out which ones are cleaner and which are dirtier.

I think Valhalla is just too complex and versatile for soem people.

But it doesn't make it cleanear. It is not about the modulation only. If it IS, why not to make it without the modulation? Check the new Voxengo reverb, for instance. (there is anyway an additional modulation knob exists).

Exactly - and it comes basically down to being a mere matter of taste which (if any) you prefer. And it is perfectly possible to express that perference of yours for one without the requirement of slagging of the other.

Both VVV and R4 are great reverbs. Sometimes one works, sometimes other. Its best to have them all - problem solved.

Yeah, these kids just don't remember what it was like in VST-land back in the day. There were no good reverbs. Sonic Timeworks? Never got in with it. The first one I really liked was the old Princeton Digital Stereo Room 2016 (now Eventide). There was that terrible old Lexicon plugin that I think Cakewalk was somehow involved in...Now, there's a ton of different reverb flavors.

For my own tastes: I'm in the "Exponential Stuff is too clean" camp. Even when you intentionally dirty it up using the Warp features, it just doesn't do it for me. But that's a taste thing. I just prefer darker, noiser, "meant to be heard", type of reverbs. My favorite algorithmic verbs are ValhallaVintageVerb, Supermassive, Relab LX480, and Relab Sonsig. Sometimes Eos in Superhall mode. Just love that modulated digital reverb sound with roots in the 70s and 80s. There are also some good plate plugins that get used a lot on some sources (Valhalla, Arturia, UVI, others). I've got verbs like the Relab VSR-S24 (TC System 6000 inspired), and Exponential, but frankly, I think they're kind of boring while excellent sounding. I tend to lean towards convolution if I want clean and realistic.

Also, with Exponential being essentially abandoned, it just seems like a bad time to buy (at least for non-Windows users).

So it's all about taste. Which seems obvious. Some people will harbor exactly opposing opinions and that's cool with me.

Convolution is the way to go here too. ConvologyXT 'basic' version is free and comes with a crapload of IR's from their 'full version' that should be more than enough for anybody. Not to mention you can grab IR's everywhere on the internet and use those as well. Waves IR-L can be had for VERY cheap usually too, think I got that for $10, and even Logic Pro's Space Designer is still top notch, but I just use Convology usually.

Got Excalibur, R2, R4, etc through Plugin Boutiques good old $5/10/Free sales and all that. Used them like once to check them out and they definitely show the later Lexicon legacy they came from. Reminds me of my MPX550, the reverbs and effects are nice but just too 'sterile' clean for me too. I'd rather use my old Roland SRV or Boss SE boxes instead. Not too long after I got all those EA plugs, they started breaking left and right after MacOS updates, right now the only one that will even authorize anymore is Phoenixverb so I just got rid of them.. Someone already mentioned plugins like Breaktweaker and Iris, and sadly, Exponential's IP is going to go the same route as iDrum and Phatmatik Pro when Izotope bought Bitshift/Glaresoft. Those two plugins were killed and became 'Breaktweaker' which nobody bought because it was a mess and then died altogether. Now they've done it again with EA's stuff. Get ready for a convoluted mess of some 'ultimate reverb' plugin that wont work the same, wont sound the same, and will end up disappearing in the sunset after a year or two.

NI Raum was a nice surprise. It gave me that "this sounds really good" feeling. And it was free. But I'm not an reverb expert.

I'd agree with you that Raum is very good. Very few people are reverb experts, but trust your ears.
